Following a hiatus of more than three years from the professional game, French midfielder Paul Pogba has returned to the pinnacle of the sport by joining Ligue 1 side AS Monaco after signing a two-year deal in the Principality. Pogba, one of the best players of the previous ten years, is back after missing a large chunk of his peak, which made him very emotional and caused him to break down during the signing of his contract.

It is easy to understand why the former Manchester United player let his emotions get the better of him, given that he is now 32 and hasn't played consistent football since he was 28. "Thank you for trusting me," Pogba stated in a video posted by the Monaco social media channels.

After testing positive for non-endogenous testosterone, a prohibited substance, Pogba was banned by FIFA and has not played a minute of competitive football in the past two years. After an appeal, Pogba's 18-month suspension was reduced, and he and Juventus agreed to break up his contract.

Since his last appearance in Europe's top football arenas, the midfielder has endured a particularly harsh few years due to a string of injuries that have plagued a tumultuous period. Although the 6'3" French star has been gifted with amazing unicorn-like talent, he missed 20 games in his final season at Manchester United in 2021/22, and things only got worse: after signing with Juventus for a return to the Italian giants in 2022/23, Pogba was only able to play 161 minutes over the course of the season due to knee surgery and a variety of muscle strains.

On the eve of the 2022 World Cup, Pogba would suffer another injury, making things worse for him. Previously, Pogba was the Best Young Player at the 2014 World Cup, and he may have been France's finest player during their victory march in Russia in 2018.

Pogba will have the opportunity to establish a new home back in his native country with AS Monaco, which will also benefit from competing in the UEFA Champions League with the Monegasque team after they came third in last year's Ligue 1.
