Tensions Flare as Pant Hurls Ball Over Umpire’s Refusal; Bumrah, Gill Accused of Provoking Official

The India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant's annoyance reached its breaking point in the first hour of Day 3 at Headingley, when he reacted angrily to Chris Gaffaney, the on-field umpire, for not changing the ball despite repeated appeals. Following a check through the gauge, Jasprit Bumrah's request for a ball change was denied, and Pant stepped in to bring the matter up with the umpire. However, in a moment of obvious annoyance, Pant hurled the ball backhandedly towards bowler Mohammed Siraj, unable to conceal his displeasure at the ball being once again declared fit for usage.

The crowd at Headingley reacted audibly to the behavior, as the stands resonated with loud jeers at Pant's response. Even though the throw wasn't directed at anybody and Siraj calmly retrieved the ball, the motion may still raise questions from the match referee because it openly displayed disagreement with an umpiring judgment.

Live Score for the First Test Day 3 between India and England

Pant has generally had a good Test, both behind the stumps and in the field, having hit a counter-attacking century in India's first innings. This was an unusual outburst of emotion from him.

It was evident that Rishabh Pant was upset by the umpire's decision not to switch the ball.

But India's complaints went beyond that. The same umpire was questioned by captain Shubman Gill about the state of the ball during Siraj's subsequent over. Following a pitch, Bumrah also approached the umpire once more. Former India cricketer Ravi Shastri, who was on the air during the play, said that it is "not worth" going to the umpire again and again, despite the umpire's ruling remaining unchanged.

"Going to the umpire isn't worthwhile. Everyone should be asked by Shubman Gill to simply wait four or five overs before leaving. The umpires will only get more annoyed by this, Shastri remarked.

When the incident happened, England was starting to pick up steam thanks to Harry Brook. Brook displayed his intention with a beautiful ramp shot over gully for four, following dancing down the track to interrupt Siraj's length, right before Pant's encounter with the umpire. India had set up a crowded close-in field, which featured a ridiculous mid-on and mid-off.

Earlier, India made an early strike in the first few minutes of the third day of the Headingley Test by dismissing centurion Ollie Pope for 106. Prasidh Krishna, who had a terrible day on Day 2, took the wicket by finding a nick off Pope on a delivery outside the off stump. To make sure Krishna recorded his first wicket of the game, Pant made no errors behind the stumps.

The lower middle order let down India's three centurions, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, despite the team's score of 471 in the first innings. The side lost seven wickets in a mere 41 runs.
