The two young guns, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, once again stepped up and accepted the challenge of carrying the bat in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Jaiswal has so far assumed the role of opener during the Indian Test batting transition, while Gill has filled the void left by Virat Kohli at No. 4, making the changeover seem seamless. Initially, the unexpected retirements of Rohit Sharma and Kohli left a void in India's batting lineup, prompting worries about experience and stability. Nonetheless, the shift has been rather smooth up to this point, with the new-look batting lineup showing positive indications and rising to the challenge in the beginning of this new era.

Shubman, the skipper, maintained his excellent form with the bat and began his tenure as captain with a fantastic century at Edgbaston, scoring hundreds in consecutive games. Jaiswal once again laid the groundwork with an 87-run innings at the top.

Jaiswal and Gill's outstanding batting display on Day 1 of the Edgbaston Test, which helped pull India out of a difficult situation, made a strong impression on legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar.

From the very first pitch, @ybj_19 established the tone. @ShubmanGill maintained his composure, remained calm under pressure, maintained a strong defense, and was completely in charge. He was intelligent, brave, and upbeat. Elegant knocks from both. "Well done, fellas!" Tendulkar posted on X.

Gill’s unbeaten 114 formed the backbone of India’s strong total of 310/5 at stumps on Day 1 of the second Test, while Yashasvi Jaiswal chipped in with a flamboyant 87 to give the visitors a solid platform.

The Indian skipper took the onus on himself and showed great composure while scoring his 7th Test century where looked in complete control while taking India forward in the game.

“When responsibility calls, some rise and some soar”

His stellar innings drew praise from mentor Yuvraj Singh, who lauded Gill for stepping up when it mattered most and applauded him for joining the elite club of captains to score back-to-back Test centuries.

"When responsibility calls, some rise and some soar! @ShubmanGill just became one of the rare few to score consecutive hundreds as Test captain! A calm head, a bold bat and a hunger to lead by example @GraemeSmith49 would be proud of the company! #IndiaVSEng," Yuvraj wrote on X.

Meanwhile, Shubman has a big task cut out on Day 2 to help India get past 450 and convert his century into a daddy knock to put pressure on England, who opted to bowl first. With Jasprit Bumrah rested for the match as part of workload management, India will be aiming to post a sizeable total to give their bowlers a much-needed cushion.
