Being a Durham bowler at the Oval during a County Championship match in London this weekend was a very long two days, as Surrey racked up an incredible 820-9 in their first innings. With the fourth-highest score of any team in the competition's lengthy and storied history, the club's total is the greatest it has ever recorded in first-class cricket.

Surrey continued to bat, but they accumulated their total before declaring by scoring at a high rate over 161 overs. Former England opener Dom Sibley stole the show, despite the fact that their score included four separate centuries. Sibley started the game by simply continuing to bat throughout the innings, scoring 305 runs with a huge triple-century.

Will Jacks (119) and Dan Lawrence (178) were two other outstanding performers for Surrey, both scoring at more than a run a ball as the team went on the offensive against the Durham bowling, breaking their previous record of 811 runs in an innings, which was set 126 years ago, in 1899. The fourth hundred of the innings was made by Sam Curran.

Record of the unwanted kind for Durham spinner

This round of County games is being played with the Kookaburra ball rather than the traditional Dukes, a recent change made by ECB director Rob Key to get an idea of which players might be well-suited for tours of Australia. The Durham bowlers will not be sending Key letters of appreciation anytime soon; the Kookaburra and the hot summer weather in London combined to create a thankless assignment.

George Drissell, an off-spinner, bore the brunt of the bowling and the punishment, giving a massive 45 overs and giving up numbers of 1-247. In a single innings of the County Championship, no bowler has given up more runs.

He was one of only four bowlers who bowled at least 25 overs. Matthew Potts, a fast bowler, bowled 25 overs and took no wickets, but Danil Hogg and Will Rhodes had more success in their extended spells, taking two and three wickets respectively.

As a result, Durham batted out 28 overs but made slow, sluggish progress, only managing to score 59/1 at the end of the second day. A long, long distance to travel.

Jake Libby and Adam Hose's pair of double centuries for Worcestershire, which included a 395-run partnership between the two, brought their team to 679/7d in their game against Hampshire in Southampton. This game wasn't the only one in the current round with some high first innings scores.
