NFL great Ryan Clark has highlighted the sole reason why Lamar Jackson, the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, must triumph in a Super Bowl.

Clark traced the development of the 'black quarterback' in the NFL while appearing with Cam Newton on ESPN's 'First Take'.

"I want to tell you this, and I want to tell Randall Cunningham, Russell Wilson, and Michael Vick the same thing." This is how the role has changed. We don't arrive to Michael Vick without Randall Cunningham attempting to be a pocket passer and displaying his athleticism. We don't get a Cam Newton if Michael Vick doesn't acknowledge that and strive to improve his passing and leadership skills. "We don't have a Lamar Jackson' if Cam Newton doesn't bring the style of play that he had the chance to bring from Auburn to the NFL and win an MVP doing it," Clark said on the program.

According to Ryan Clark, the quarterbacks mentioned have been required to reach this stage because of the negative perception of African Americans playing that position.

"And that's why we need Lamar Jackson to take that next step and hold that Lombardi trophy the same way we all cried when Doug Williams did it in the 80s," the ex-safety continued.

So far, Lamar Jackson has won the NFL MVP award twice, during the 2019 and 2023 seasons. However, he has not yet captured a Super Bowl championship, and he was extremely near to doing it the last time he was named MVP. In the AFC Championship Game of the 2023 season, the Baltimore Ravens were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs, who went on to win the championship.

Jackson's quarterbacking technique, which relies heavily on his legs as well as his arms, has drawn criticism from many. His critics would undoubtedly be silenced if he won a Super Bowl title, which would solidify his already remarkable legacy in the NFL.
