Steve Smith’s WTC Final in Jeopardy After Major Injury—Surgery on the Cards

It is improbable that Steve Smith, Australia's talisman, will play in the rest of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord's Cricket Ground. The 36-year-old sustained a finger injury while trying to catch Proteas captain Temba Bavuma off Mitchell Starc's bowling on Day 3. During the last session of Day 3, Ian Smith, the former New Zealand wicketkeeper who was commentating, disclosed that Smith had a compound dislocation of his right little finger.

Smith wore a helmet and was positioned nearby at slip. Bavuma tipped one into the cordon off Starc's bowling. The Proteas captain was given a reprieve when the Australian great failed to take the catch and dropped a sitter.

Smith dropped to the floor right away, clutching his finger. He subsequently exited the pitch to get medical attention. The Australia The No. 4 batsman then went to the hospital for scans after not taking the field in the last session of Day 3.

"Steve Smith has a compound dislocation of his right middle finger. After being evaluated on the scene, he was now transported to the hospital for additional assessment and treatment. "That will hurt them in a couple of ways," Smith stated live.

"Ironically, he accomplished it by dropping a catch, but a shoulder to lean on is not going to be there because of an experience plus element and tight circumstances," he said.

Matthew Hayden, a former Australian player, remarked that the injury would require a long time to heal. He was explicit that he does not anticipate Smith suddenly appearing on the field.

"He's just the best batsman of his generation in Australian cricket. It's that straightforward, to be honest. He will have at least eight weeks, along with some rehabilitation time, to get a feel for holding the bat and ball. "There for sure potential surgery," Hayden stated.

Cricket Australia has also released a statement

Cricket Australia has also issued a statement providing an update on Steve Smith and whether or not the batsman will continue to play in the match.

In an official announcement, Australia stated, "Steve Smith has suffered a compound dislocation of his right little finger while fielding in the slip cordon during the ICC Men's World Test Championship Final against South Africa at Lord's."

"The Australian team medical staff evaluated him at the ground and transported him to the hospital for x-rays and additional treatment," the statement continued.

Australia, who were bowled out for 207 in their second innings, had earlier set South Africa a target of 282 runs. Mitchell Starc saved Australia after the defending champions fell to 73 for 7.

In the second innings, Starc scored 58 runs without losing. Kagiso Rabada was the Proteas' best bowler, finishing with four wickets.
