Sinner on the Brink of Tears After Painful French Open Final Loss to Alcaraz
5 months ago | 5 Views
As in the French Open final against Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner gave it his all in attempting to hide his tears behind several anxious grins, but the anguish and disappointment in his eyes, along with his trembling voice, betrayed everything. Alcaraz's incredible comeback, which saw him win the fourth set by a single point after saving three match points, as well as win the thrilling fifth set on tie break to defend his clay title, came just one point away from giving him his first French Open title and his third consecutive Grand Slam crown after last year's US Open title and back-to-back Australian Open victories.
A dejected Sinner vowed that he would attempt to "delete it somehow" and return stronger the following year, though he admitted that he wouldn't be able to get a decent night's sleep after the game, which was the longest French Open final of the open era.
A heartbroken Sinner stated in his on-court address, "It's simpler to play than talk right now; I won't sleep well tonight, but that's fine."
"To get to this stage in the competition, we gave it our all. Despite how tough things are right now, it was a fantastic competition, and I'd want to express my gratitude to my team in the stands.
The World No.1 met every conceivable criteria for gauging heartbreaks—if there ever were one—even if he didn't cry.
We attempt to remove it in any way we can, focus on the good, and move on. He continued, "There aren't any other options."
"It hurts, but you cannot keep crying."
In their first encounter in a Grand Slam final, which was also the first championship match between two men born in the 2000s, Alcaraz defeated Sinner for the fifth time in a row.
Having previously defeated Sinner in the Rome final, where the Italian made his comeback to the sport in May following a three-month suspension for doping, Alcaraz holds an overall lead of 8-4.
The first two sets of the championship match against Alcaraz were won by Sinner, who defeated the famous Novak Djokovic in the semifinal in straight sets. Everything appeared to be going his way when he broke Alcaraz to start the third set, but the Spaniard wasn't about to give up his championship easily and won four consecutive games to take a 4-1 lead.
After losing serve at 5-3, Alcaraz quickly broke to love to force a fourth set, soaking up the cheers from the audience at Court Philippe Chatrier.
With that, Sinner's streak of 31 straight Grand Slam sets victories came to an end.
In the third game, Alcaraz saved a break point as Sinner doubled down during a string of holds. As the Italian moved closer to the finish line after breaking at 3-3, it seemed like he was getting closer to winning.
However, Alcaraz had different plans as he saved three match points at 3-5 before breaking Sinner when he attempted to clinch the championship on his serve.
Alcaraz was encouraged by consecutive aces in the tiebreaker and into a game-winning fifth set.
After Alcaraz won two break points to take a 3-1 lead, a disheartened Sinner immediately dropped his serve, which only made his depression worse. But there was another turn, which was amazing.
With the championship in his hands, Alcaraz stumbled this time, as Sinner snapped a three-game surge that forced the Spaniard to hold serve in order to extend the match. At the time, Alcaraz was losing 5-3.
He maintained his composure and established a ten-point tie-break, which Alcaraz won with incredible shots until the very conclusion, when he hit a scorching forehand to win his first championship point.
