Shubman Gill’s Jubilant Outburst After Replicating Virat Kohli’s Consecutive Century Streak as Captain

India captain Shubman Gill maintained his outstanding performance by hitting a second hundred in a row in the Test series against England. Gill's 199-ball innings to reach the triple-figure score made him the fourth Indian captain to record back-to-back centuries in his first two games as a Test captain.

In a day marked by criticism of India's team choices for the second Test in Birmingham, Gill maintained his composure and scored his century in the last session of day one by hitting a well-executed stroke through backward square leg off a fuller delivery from Joe Root. The Indian locker room stood up and applauded as Gill let out a tremendous roar, bowed, and kissed his bat.

Since Virat Kohli, who had three hundred in his first two games as captain during the December 2014 trip to Australia, Gill became the fourth Indian captain to do it. Vijay Hazare and Sunil Gavaskar are the other names on the list.

After Mohammad Azharuddin (Lord's and Old Trafford, 1990) and Hazare (Delhi and Brabourne, 1951-52), Gill became the third India captain to score centuries in back-to-back Tests against England. During the home series in 2024, he also became the fifth Indian batsman to hit three consecutive centuries against England in Test cricket. He scored the first of them in the Dharamsala Test, which was a 110 off 150. Among the other names on the list are Azharuddin (1984–1985), Dilip Vengsarkar (1985–1986), and Dravid (2002 and 2008–2011).

In addition to accomplishing this feat at Headingley the previous month, Gill also became the first Indian batsman to hit hundreds twice on the first day of a Test in England.

England concluded the day with momentum despite Yashasvi Jaiswal's 87 and Gill's hit. Chris Woakes chose to bowl first at home and delivered one of his finest spells with the new ball, which included the dismissal of opening batsman KL Rahul and four maidens in five overs.

With a barrage of boundaries, Karun Nair and Jaiswal momentarily turned the tables, but Brydon Carse dismissed Nair right before lunch. The opener then shared a 66-run partnership with Gill, but in the end he lost his cool and gave Ben Stokes his wicket. Rishabh Pant had a similar experience, falling prey to Shoaib Bashir. Woakes struck his second wicket in the following over, dismissing Nitish Kumar Reddy.
