Shubman Gill’s India Break 58-Year Edgbaston Curse, Level Series Against England

In a dominant Test performance, Shubman Gill's modern India made history by defeating England by 336 runs, recording their first victory at Edgbaston in ten tries and their first there since 1967. India leveled the series 1-1 in a week of courageous hitting and unwavering discipline, but in a manner that their renowned predecessors were never able to accomplish on English soil.

Gill was the center of this historic victory. At the age of 25, the captain stood taller than ever in only his second Test as captain, becoming the first India captain to record a double century in England and just the second Indian captain to score two centuries in a Test, following Sunil Gavaskar. Gill's 269 in the first innings was a masterclass in strokeplay, tempo, and control, which shattered several records, including Virat Kohli's previous mark of 254* for the highest score by an Indian captain. As if that weren't enough, he came back in the second innings and blasted a scorching 161 off 162 balls, propelling India to a massive 608-run lead.

India's dominance started with the bat after being inserted on a calm Edgbaston pitch. Following initial jitters, Gill and Ravindra Jadeja put together a massive 203-run partnership. Jadeja's composed 89 gave the skipper the essential backup as the captain marched towards his double century. Later, Washington Sundar formed a 144-run partnership with Gill, and India went on to score 587, which is the highest total England has allowed under Ben Stokes' captaincy.

In retaliation, England's top order crumbled under the strain. Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep, who was brought in to replace a well-rested Jasprit Bumrah, went on a rampage. As England was bowled out for 407, Siraj took a five-wicket haul and finished with six wickets to his credit. After KL Rahul scored a half-century (55) in the second innings, building upon his performance from the previous innings, Gill once again led from the front. The Indian captain struck a lightning-quick century, while Rishabh Pant responded with his trademark flair (65 off 58). As India declared a target of 608, Jadeja contributed an undefeated 69.

England, a nation known for its tenacity, tried to fight back with Harry Brook, Ollie Pope, and later Ben Stokes. However, the fifth day saw the game's beginning pushed back by rain, giving India even less opportunity to go through the English batting lineup. Nevertheless, the eventual start resulted in significant advances: a brilliant three-man strategy devised by Gill to trap Stokes before lunch, with Jadeja and Sundar, Krishna, removing Brook, and Akash Deep firing Pope.

Akash Deep's Fife Player

With the ball, Siraj was the star of India's first innings, but Akash Deep delivered a remarkable performance in the second. The Indian pacer maintained constant pressure on the batters and finished the match with a well-earned five-wicket haul (6/99). He destroyed the English top order with the wickets of Joe Root (6), Ollie Pope (24), and Ben Duckett (25). He successfully dashed England's chances of a miraculous tie in the second session by bringing Jamie Smith's struggle to a close at 88.

Siraj, Krishna, Jadeja, and Sundar all contributed to taking wickets, but Akash Deep was the best with the ball. During the second Test, India's slip-catching, which was especially astute following the Leeds drops, was a major factor. As the series is currently tied at 1-1, England was ultimately bowled out for 271. On July 10, both teams will be back at the renowned Lord's for the third game of the series.
