Shubman Gill’s Future: Follow Kohli or Dhoni?
4 months ago | 5 Views
Following England's animosity on Day 4 of the current third Test match of the series, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar on Monday challenged Shubman Gill to choose between Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. This was in response to the revelation of his emotional vulnerability. Gill, who broke the record for the most runs scored in Birmingham during the second Test with 430, helped India win by 336 runs, tying the series. However, he only managed scores of 16 and 6 at Lord's.
The fourth evening of the game, Gill was greeted by a hostile England camp, and the home side wasted no time in bringing up the incident on Day 3, when he had assaulted Zak Crawley and accused him of intentionally wasting time.
Immediately after Karun Nair was fired, Gill grabbed strike, and the England team erupted in conversation, with every word aimed at the 25-year-old. Duckett, who was with Crawley when Indian players verbally assaulted him on Day 3, could be heard sledging Gill as he passed him to assume his fielding position. After only nine balls, the India captain left the field, demonstrating how well England's psychological strategy had worked.
In the midst of England's sledging on Monday, Manjrekar used social media to highlight that Gill seemed wary in his attitude and lacked the confidence he had displayed in Edgbaston. The former India batter reminded fans that Kohli, whom Gill admires and is frequently compared to, excelled in challenging situations, while Dhoni, another Indian legend, was renowned for his calm and collected demeanor under stress. As a result, Manjrekar advised Gill to choose his strategy after the incident at Lord's.
“The hostility that Gill received from England at the crease last night contributed significantly to his seeming hesitation. The madder Virat got, the better he performed. Dhoni is just the opposite. "Gill needs to figure out whether he performs better as a batter when he is calm or when he is enraged," he said in a tweet.
Talking about the match, Washington Sundar recorded his best career figures on overseas soil, picking 4 wickets for 22 runs, as India folded England for 192 runs. In reply, India lost four wickets at the start of the final innings, including nightwatchman Akash Deep, on Day 4. India will resume their chase on Day 5 on 58 for four, with KL Rahul unbeaten on 33.
