Shubman Gill’s Edgbaston Heroics Ease Pressure on Gambhir

Sunday's victory in Birmingham was more than just a record-breaking triumph. With the 336-run triumph—India's greatest ever victory away from home—India let out a sigh of relief since it not only tied the match against England, keeping the series alive, but also gave head coach Gautam Gambhir a "lifeline," according to reports. The former India opener also has reason to be grateful to his captain, Shubman Gill.
Although Gambhir's tenure, which began in July of last year, includes the Champions Trophy title victory that India achieved earlier this year in Dubai with an undefeated record, the team has struggled in Test cricket. They suffered an unprecedented whitewash on home soil against New Zealand after winning at home against Bangladesh the previous September, followed by a loss on their tour of Australia, which cost India the chance to compete in the WTC final.
India's worries remained the same despite losing in Leeds as the Test season restarted last month with the new WTC cycle. And although many predicted that the trend would stay the same, India orchestrated a turnaround in Birmingham. In 19 tries, India secured their first-ever victory at the venue thanks to Akash Deep's 10-wicket match haul and Gill's scores of 269 and 161.
Amid the growing pressure, former India cricketer Surinder Khanna thought the victory gave Gambhir some relief.
"Gambhir has gotten a lifeline here since we have lost against New Zealand, Australia, and the first Test during his term. Shubman Gill and the squad deserve all the credit. From this point forward, there will be a lot of confidence. The beauty of cricket lies in its unpredictability. The outcomes will follow if we perform to our full ability. "Hopefully Bumrah will be back, which would certainly be beneficial," he told NDTV.
Additionally, Khanna gave Gill high marks for his exceptional batting display in Edgbaston.
The first captain to achieve a double century and a century in the same innings, six wickets apiece for Siraj and Akash Deep, and "Captain leading from the front." I applaud the team for their triumph. Following the first test, Gill stated, sensibly, that he realized he needed to play longer innings. Give him time; he is young, he said.
But as the squad heads to Lord's in an attempt to take the lead in the series, the previous wicketkeeper-batsman urged them to maintain their composure.
"Currently the weather conditions are supporting India, but you never know when bowling conditions might shift and problems may arise. With their aggressive tactics, our squad includes T20 players. Although cricket teaches humility well, India owns today, he said in conclusion.
The Lord's Test match will begin on Thursday, July 10.
