Shubman Gill’s Command Rejected by Jadeja, Captain Steps Back

Shubman Gill’s Command Rejected by Jadeja, Captain Steps Back

The stump mic has captured several of the on-field chats between the Indian players, which have consistently gone viral during the first two Tests against England. These vary from amusing quips (frequently from vice-captain Rishabh Pant) to tactical conversation and banter with English players.

One video that went viral on the internet on Sunday depicted Ravindra Jadeja apparently rejecting a command from captain Shubman Gill, who then silently resumed his place without objection.

It's probable that the over took place during the collaboration between Jamie Smith and Ben Stokes, even though the video didn't show it precisely. Gill, who was in slip, seemed to gesture to Jadeja to move the long-on fielder, probably in expectation of Stokes stepping out to aim that area. The young captain was forced to accept the call in silence, though, as Jadeja immediately rejected the request.

"Jaddu bhai, take him too up there," Gill advised. Jadeja, bring him up as well. (Marne, go forward one step.) "Let him step out and hit one to see if he can."

"Usko udhar kuch kaam nahi hai," Jadeja said in response. At least if it goes down, there should be someone to catch it. Even if you stand there, you'll need someone to catch him (he's of no use over there). At least, someone should be there to grab the ball if it goes that way. Of course, you can put him there, but someone has to be ready to catch him.)

India finally won in Birmingham, India, after 19 tries, and they did so in spectacular fashion, winning by a score of 336 runs, which was their greatest victory outside of India. This win brought the current five-match series to a tie at 1-1.

Having achieved the highest score ever recorded by a captain in a single Test match, with 269 and 161 runs, Gill was instrumental in the win. However, the pacer Akash Deep produced incredible match numbers of 10/187 (4/88 and 6/99), and he gave him the victory. Along the way, Akash surpassed Chetan Sharma's longstanding record (10/188) for the best bowling numbers by an Indian in a Test match in England.

In the post-match news conference, Gill stated, "Yesterday, I think, getting through the top order is never easy."

"The spell of Akash Deep, how he got those two wickets, kind of gave the confidence to everyone that we can win this Test match and when he came in this morning with the ball hitting the cracks, yes, the ball was seaming, the odd ball seaming, that's what really instilled the confidence in all of the players that, yes, we can do it," he continued.

At the Lord's, the third Test match will begin on Thursday, July 10.
