Shubman Gill’s Batting Streak: Coach Sees It Beyond Captaincy Role

Sitanshu Kotak, the batting coach for India, thinks that Shubman Gill's scorching form during the current Test series against England is due to a change in attitude rather than the demands of captaincy. Shubman's overseas record was scrutinized before the series began, but he silenced his detractors by scoring a record-breaking double century and a pair of tonnes, giving him a strong start to his time as captain. Gill seems to have effortlessly entered the enormous vacuum created by Virat Kohli in the No. 4 position, based on the manner he has performed.

Kotak attributes Gill's success with the bat to his clarity and mental preparation. From a close perspective, he noted that his mentality has shifted from Australia to England.

"Things have shifted for reasons other than the captaincy, in my opinion. I believe it's more about his mental attitude. I saw it in Australia during our first practice game and then during the India series; his attitude has certainly shifted since then. Additionally, there has been a clear shift in technology. Speaking to the media at Lord's, Kotak stated that he pondered about it, made a few tweaks, and is still working on it, which every batsman does in silence.

Kotak emphasized that Gill's intent and calmness at the crease have been the most remarkable aspects, even though his twin centuries have occurred since taking over as captain.

"Therefore, I believe that his mentality is far more important. He's now in the mood to spend time at the crease. His ability is such that any loose ball he gets becomes a boundary, as I've previously mentioned. Kotak said that he frequently hits hundreds in 140 to 150 balls.

'Shubman Gill didn't hit a single ball until he was properly set'

While giving an illustration of this from the first Test, where Gill hit a century in the first innings, the hitting coach claimed that it is more the mental side that has allowed him to improve his red-ball game.

"I would argue that it's more psychological, and yes, he has certainly made some technical changes." However, the way he has batted suggests that his resolve is primarily psychological. Everyone must have observed that he made an early stroke in the first game, second innings, that he later acknowledged was too soon. He discussed it. He then waited until he was in the right position before hitting a single ball in the following Test. Therefore, it's much more psychological, Kotak said.
