Nitish Kumar Reddy, a young all-rounder from India, proved to be an unexpected enforcer on Day 1 at Lord's. He stunned England's top order with a brilliant spell that included two quick wickets and a moment of sheer surprise that even caught Joe Root off guard.

A lot of the discussion centered on the comeback of Jasprit Bumrah and how India would respond with the ball after England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bat under a clear sky. However, it was Reddy, who is frequently thought of as an unusual menace in red-ball cricket, who had the loudest voice in the morning session. Reddy took out both openers in the same over that he was introduced, shortly after the first drinks break. One that moved late squared up Zak Crawley, who had hit a few beautiful boundaries, and he edged it to Pant once more for 18, while Ben Duckett feathered a glance down the leg side to Rishabh Pant for 23.

However, the sixteenth over, which followed two overs later, brought the morning to life even more. Reddy, who is not known for his frightening speed, produced a stunning bouncer that rose abruptly from a length. Up until then, Joe Root had appeared at ease, but now he was unsure of what to do. At first, he appeared to be about to get out, maybe to go driving, but he had to retreat quickly when the ball flew over his head and into Pant's gloves.

Indian captain Shubman Gill couldn't hold back his joy as he stood in the slips. Nitish's mother tongue, Telugu, was spoken loudly by him when he said, "Bagundi ra mawa!" which roughly translates to "Very good, man!" The bowler, who had an immediate impact after being brought on, was also cheered by the slip cordon.

India held a slight lead in the first session, but Root was undefeated on 24 at halftime, with Ollie Pope on 12. In the second session of the day, though, the pair has maintained their composure.

England had won the toss earlier in the day and chosen to bat, breaking with the previous two games in which Ben Stokes had chosen to field. The third test began with Sachin Tendulkar ringing the Lord's bell and unveiling his portrait at the museum, which lent the start of the day's play a sense of seriousness.
