Shubman Gill has embraced the role of captain as naturally as a fish in the water. The 25-year-old's batting has benefited from becoming India's top Test player; the right-handed hitter is scoring runs in the current Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series against England. After scoring 147 in the opening innings of the Headingley Test, Gill supported it with a stunning 269-run performance in the first innings of the current Edgbaston Test, which helped the visitors score 587 runs overall.

Ravi Shastri, Nasser Hussain, and Kumar Sangakkara debated if the decision to make Shubman Gill the captain was the correct one, even if there were other candidates like Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, in advance of the start of play on Day 3 of the ongoing second Test of the five-match series, which India is dominating.

Although Gill may be at the top of the run charts against England, it is important to remember that his leadership was questioned when the home team chased down 371 in the first test to take a 1-0 lead.

Now that Gill has been selected as captain, Hussain believes that one must exercise patience. But he cautioned the child about the potential "negative impact" that being the captain might have on his hitting.

"Of course, there were other choices. Jasprit Bumrah had clearly succeeded and done a fantastic job of it. You could always tell from a little sample size that Jasprit had a good sense of the game and knew what he was doing. However, it's not ideal that he misses Test matches. As your captain, you seek consistency. One possibility would be Rishabh Pant. In a Sky Sports discussion on Friday, Hussain stated, "You can see out there in the field, Rishabh was doing a lot of the moves last night."

"He has the greatest view, but he's also batting at five, keeping, and captaining. That may be asking too much of him. Additionally, Shubman has performed admirably in the IPL. His hitting is the other aspect. You want to make sure that his hitting is not negatively impacted by the absence of Kohli and Rohit. He hasn't performed exceptionally well on his travels across England, particularly when he's been away from home. Moreover, so far, even with a limited sample size, it has had a genuinely beneficial influence on his batting and arrival at four, he continued.

The cricketing IQ belongs to Shubman

Following Hardik Pandya's trade to the Mumbai Indians, Shubman Gill took over as captain of the Gujarat Titans in the previous year. In the T20 league, Kumar Sangakkara, the Rajasthan Royals' Director of Cricket, has been paying close attention to Gill.

Prior to the series against England, Gill had no centuries in the SENA nations, but two games into the series, he had two tons, one of which was a double century. With his double century, Shubman Gill also achieved the highest individual score by an Indian in England.
