Shubman Gill Named Captain Over Bumrah? Gavaskar’s Bold Revelation Explains the True Reason

The BCCI's choice to make Shubman Gill the new Test captain of India is still up for debate. Although some members of the general public and the Indian cricket community, like Kapil Dev, welcomed the choice, others believe that the young man should not be handed the reins of captaincy just yet. At 25 years old, Gill has only represented India in 32 test matches, and his average of little over 35 is widely believed to be insufficient for captaincy. Virender Sehwag went a step further and named Rishabh Pant as the "second-best" candidate for captaincy, relegating Gill to third place, while Anil Kumble made a roundabout comment to Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, that Gill needs to first establish his position in the Test team as a batter.

In terms of the top choice, Sehwag supported Jasprit Bumrah. Why? Since Rohit Sharma was seen as the successor to the Indian pace spearhead for a very long period. When Rohit was unable to participate in the rearranged fifth Test against England in 2022 at Edgbaston and again during the Perth Test against Australia, he took the initiative to lead the team. In the same series, when Rohit withdrew from the Sydney Test and Bumrah took his place, he was on course to assume the captaincy for good when the moment arrived. Unfortunately, that strategy was derailed by a persistent back issue. Sunil Gavaskar offered insights into the timing and manner of the leadership transition in his reflection.

The selectors' decision was made simpler by the fact that Jasprit Bumrah, a complete team player and selfless cricketer, told them that they may focus on Gill as the new captain of India because his back ailment may prevent him from participating in all Test matches. Former India captain wrote in his piece for Mid-Day, "Without a question, Bumrah will be there for Gill to lean on and he will also certainly lead the bowling squad as they attempt and plan the English batters' dismissals."

Sunil Gavaskar's sole worry

All Indian supporters will be pleased with Gavaskar's general evaluation of the team. The side is well-balanced, according to the Little Master, but the schedule is the only thing that bothers him. The first Test between India and England begins on June 20, and the following four Tests take place over the course of 33 days. With not much time to unwind between games, that's 45 days for all five Tests, and as a result, Gavaskar praised BCCI's choice to choose backup players, particularly bowlers, who might be useful.

"The Indian team appears to be well balanced, and the selectors' jobs are now a bit simpler because the BCCI has enough money to choose 18 players rather than the 16 that the majority of other teams choose. As a result, they have recruited Nitish Reddy, who can bowl a lively medium pace, along with six new ball users. Gavaskar continued, "Yes, the tour is a congested one, with five Test matches in six weeks, and as a result, there will be a need for net bowlers because the Test bowlers will need some rest after the efforts in the back-to-back Test matches."
