Shubman Gill Mirrors Kohli’s Captaincy Philosophy
5 months ago | 5 Views
With the bat in his hand, Shubman Gill could not have wished for a better beginning to his career as India's captain. In his first Test as captain, a century in Leeds was followed by 161 in the second innings at Edgbaston, a man-of-the-match performance that helped India tie the series in England, in the kind of match that defines legacies.
Dinesh Karthik was reminded of a previous India captain by Gill's commanding and commanding performance in Birmingham, and he felt that Gill would seamlessly assume that captaincy position, just as a duck does when it enters water.
In an interview with Sky Cricket's podcast, Karthik recounted seeing glimpses of Virat Kohli in Gill's demeanor.
You talked about Virat Kohli, Athers. In response to Michael Atherton, Karthik said, "We talked about the captaincy a few days ago when I met him." “He said that while some people may believe, ‘I’m a great Test cricketer, I enjoyed my Test batting,’ which I did, the truth is that the best thing that ever happened to me was when I got my captaincy. The reason I'm saying this is because Shubman Gill employed the same line.

The cricket world must take notice...
Kohli is regarded as one of the best Test captains in India, but what makes him unique is his capacity to flourish under such increased stress. At the age of 25, Gill's early captaincy tenure seems to suggest that he will follow a similar path. Karthik maintained that the worldwide cricket community should be prepared for another Indian great on the way.
"He said, 'I used to bat differently, but now that I have captaincy, I almost think that this is what my team requires, rather than me wanting to do something individually as a batter.'" When Shubman Gill was making waves in the IPL, Karthik led the Kolkata Knight Riders. He was also a longtime teammate of Kohli's. I exclaimed, "Wow, this is something for which the world of cricket has to take notice."
“This is a man who has the desire, the talent, the method, and now the frame of mind as well. Karthik of India said of the Test team's future under his leadership, "I am the captain; I will lead from the front, lead off the front foot."
Despite Gill's outstanding first Test victory at Edgbaston, where he controlled the game and won by 336 runs, the task is still incomplete. The focus is now on the Lord's Test, where the batter will be hoping to keep adding to its legendary history books.
