Shubman Gill Furious, Scolds Akash Deep After Near Run-Out: ‘Dekh Kya Raha Hai?’

In the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham, Shubman Gill displayed the height of composure and patience during his record-breaking debut double century. He maintained his composure throughout, whether India lost a few quick wickets on Day 1 or England pacer Brydon Carse attempted to deceive him. None of the shots were fired in rage. He always maintained his composure. Well, nearly. In a matter of minutes, Indian pacer Akash Deep accomplished what the England pacers and captain Ben Stokes were unable to accomplish for five sessions: causing Gill to lose his composure.
Just moments before tea on the second day, Gill, who was attempting a triple century, pushed the ball to mid-wicket and ran for a single. Akash Deep wasn't quite prepared to leave the starting line. It took him forever to get started. Mid-on, Ollie Pope dove to his right, sprang up, and threw the ball toward the keeper.
Due to being off balance, the England hitter was unable to make a clean throw. Jamie Smith had to collect it from a distance from the stumps, giving Akash Deep the time he needed to return to his crease. With Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna being the next batsmen in line, a better throw would have taken Akash Deep out and significantly reduced Gill's prospects of reaching his first triple century.
If there had been any hesitation on his part, Gill himself might have been run to in another instance.
Gill was aware of this. Given what transpired in Headingley, where India scored 471 in the first innings but still lost, he understood the significance of getting India's total to 600. As soon as he arrived at the non-striker's end, Gill immediately turned around and ranted at Akash Deep.
"What are you looking at? Run right now!" shouted Gill. After taking over as India's Test captain, this was Gill's first rant at a teammate.
Fate would have it that Gill failed to reach his triple century. He was let go in the last session for 269 after being caught at midwicket while attempting to deliver a Josh Tongue delivery.
Despite the level Edgbaston pitch, the excellence, poise, and overwhelming power of Gill's masterclass, which featured 30 fours and 2 sixes, made it far superior than the circumstances. Gill established a key 144-run partnership with all-rounder Washington Sundar (42 off 103) as the England bowlers began to run out of ideas, making sure that India maintained its scoring pace after a solid beginning.
Shubman Makes Records Fall Gill Establishes a Record
The first Asian captain to hit two hundred in a Test in England.
The greatest single Test score ever recorded by an Indian in England, beating out greats like Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar.
The highest individual score ever recorded by an Indian captain, beating Virat Kohli's 254.
Equal Parts Class and Captaincy
In his second Test as captain, Gill has demonstrated both outstanding batting skills and leadership maturity, particularly since India squandered a commanding position in the first match of the series at Headingley. Gill was determined not to make the same errors as Leeds, so he played with purpose and composure, leading India over the 500 mark for the first time in the series.
Gill's innings gained steam after he restarted the day at 114 with beautiful shots on either side of the wicket. Against spin, he combined traditional cover drives with reverse sweeps and slog-sweeps, and he seemed to particularly enjoy off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, whom he easily sent for boundaries and sixes.
Gill reached his double century with a composed single off Josh Tongue that he pulled to fine leg, although he was briefly stopped at 199. In recognition of the enormity of his accomplishment, his teammates and even the crowd gave him a standing ovation as he rejoiced with emotion and raised his arms.
