Shubman Gill Faces Harsh Questions on Captaincy After First Test Defeat
5 months ago | 5 Views
Following his team's inability to protect a 371-run target in the opening Test against England, Shubman Gill's leadership has been questioned. When English openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley shared a massive 188-run stand for the first wicket, Shubman, who was captaining the Indian Test side for the first time, appeared a little lost. The 25-year-old was criticized for being a bit defensive in his strategy, as England gradually moved closer to victory while India seemed to have no defined plan. On Day 5, the team's senior players—KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant—were also observed offering advice to the bowlers and captain.
But, former Indian spinner Murali Kartik mocked the on-field dynamics, chastising the other players for often giving advice and changing the field. He thought it caused needless misunderstanding about who was actually in charge as captain.
"We can make excuses, but the fact is that India lost the game by five wickets, despite having 835 runs scored and one bowler taking five wickets. There seemed to be an excessive number of captains to me. I couldn't comprehend that. Who is the real selected captain? Sometimes Rishabh Pant, sometimes KL Rahul, and occasionally Shubman Gill as well were making recommendations. I was unable to decipher these signals. On Cricbuzz, Kartik stated that there is only one captain.
The former spinner said that it would have been understandable if it had occurred once or twice, but the input from others was rather regular, which he claimed was a bad sign.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, he said, "I know that a senior player will offer suggestions if they see someone out of the place once or twice, but it kept happening again and again, which is not a good sign."
"Shubman Gill was under pressure."
India was unable to defend a target of 371 runs on the final day, and Gill received minimal assistance from his bowlers as he captained his first Test match. Gill was compelled to constantly move his field in an attempt to find a solution as England's batters went on the offensive against the bowlers and his strategy collapsed.
"At one point, it seemed as if Gill was under pressure." No matter where the ball went, he kept positioning fielders. As captain, it's not as simple to establish your authority. Your batting did the trick, but it was clear that it became extremely difficult when your bowlers didn't live up to expectations. There are a lot of runs in 371. In the first session, he thought, there was no sign that a wicket was going to fall.
