Following Shubman Gill's century on his Test captaincy debut for India, former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh praised him. The right-handed batter, who batted in the No. 4 position that Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli made their own, hammered the England bowlers all over the park on Day 1 of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, scoring his maiden Test century in SENA nations as a result.

Gill didn't hold back and approached the bowling as soon as he got to the crease, using his innate batting approach. He took advantage of the favorable batting conditions by refusing to allow the likes of Brydon Carse, Ben Stokes, Josh Tongue, and Chris Woakes to tell him what to do.

Yuvraj, who has a strong relationship with Gill, praised him on social media, claiming the 25-year-old knows what real responsibility entails. He also stated that the best way to speak is by letting your bat speak for you, which is what Gill did.

"Some things are plainly written in the stars. @ShubmanGill, on your first Test century as captain outside, congratulations! You've let your bat do all the talking, and you clearly grasp the gravity of the situation. "Congratulations, and here's to many more!" Yuvraj posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Heading into the Headingley Test, there were a number of concerns regarding Gill's play in foreign games. Gill had not previously hit a hundred in SENA nations before the Test in Headingley. But in a manner that silenced his detractors, he disproved them.

Gill's outstanding century against England was praised by Subramaniam Badrinath, a former Indian batsman. He said, "Prince. King. #ShubmanGill," when discussing how the 25-year-old is the new "King."

On day 1, India is in charge of the proceedings

As a result of being invited to bat first, India seized control of the first day of play, with the visitors reaching 359/3 at the end of the innings. At the end of the day, Rishabh Pant and Gill are undefeated with scores of 127 and 65, respectively.

Earlier, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal combined for 91 runs for the first wicket. As Brydon Carse knocked Rahul out for 42, he broke the opening partnership. Soon after, Sai Sudharsan, making his debut, was bowled out for a duck by Ben Stokes.

But India's innings was brought back to life by a 129-run partnership for the third wicket between Gill and Jaiswal. Although Ben Stokes ultimately dismissed the latter, he had scored his fifth Test century.

Following this, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant joined India captain Gill, and the two alternated between aggressiveness and prudence to hold off the England pacers. Both batters made sure India didn't lose any more wickets before the end of Day 1.
