Shastri Stands by 2021 Call to Back KL Rahul in India’s Top-4, Awards Debut Cap for Leeds Test

On June 20, when it starts its World Test Championship cycle against England, Team India will return to Test action. The game in Leeds comes before a generational shift, as batting veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli quit the format last month. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has named his XI for the match, and a revamped Indian side, captained by young Shubman Gill, will try to make an impression from the start in the first Test at Headingley.
Ahead of the first Test, there are several defining decisions for India’s new leadership pair of Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir to make, the most important of which is selecting the next. No. 4. It's a legacy, not just a role. The epicenter of excellence has been India, ranked fourth in Test cricket, for decades. The position has been held by generational greats, from Sachin Tendulkar, who held it throughout the 2000s, to Virat Kohli, who effortlessly inherited it after Tendulkar's retirement in 2013. That illustrious spot is now empty since Kohli left Test cricket earlier this year.
KL Rahul is the most experienced batsman in India's current lineup, but Shastri thinks the new captain, Gill, should be playing the position. In his opinion, Rahul is best suited for the top.
"I think this is a big tour for him," says KL Rahul, who will be joining Yashasvi Jaiswal. As he enumerated his lineup to The ICC Review, Shastri stated, "He's the most experienced of the batsmen."
"He scored a century and had a great tour when he opened last time India visited England. Therefore, I would anticipate him to begin the innings.
"Three, I'll choose the young man, Sai Sudarshan.
"He's really impressive from what I've seen of him. "This tour will provide him with good exposure."
Nair's comeback
Shastri selects Gill as his number four, but he sees Karun Nair making a comeback to the Test XI after eight years. "In all probability, depending on what current form is, it'll be Karun Nair." He plays at five, and it's been a while since he represented India. "Pant" will be six. Rishabh.
"I believe he (Nair) has put in a lot of effort. He has only recently rejoined the group. He has an astounding amount of runs in first-last cricket.
"I told him not to just bang the door, but to kick it down and walk into that side when I met him at an IPL game." In my opinion, he has accomplished exactly that. The selectors have gazed in that way and given him a spot simply because of the amount of runs he has scored.
