Shastri Highlights Pant's High Pain Tolerance, Warns Injury Could Be Serious

Ravi Shastri, the former India coach, is worried about Rishabh Pant after he was taken to the hospital on the first day of the Manchester Test. Pant was hit on the foot after trying a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes’ bowling. He immediately winced in pain, and the physio quickly ran to him. He was on the ground for a few minutes, getting treatment. But he couldn’t stand on his foot, so he had to be carried away on a cart-like vehicle.
Pant was examined at the ground’s medical center, and just before play ended, he was rushed to the hospital for scans. The results are not out yet, but it seems unlikely he will return to play in this crucial match for India. India’s captain, Shubman Gill, also went to see him.
Shastri believes Pant’s injury will get worse overnight, no matter how much icing he gets on his foot. He gave a grim outlook, as all of India hopes for a quick recovery

Seeing Pant grimace, Shastri said, “He has a high pain threshold, but this was serious. It’s probably going to get worse overnight.” He added, “When he wakes up, it may be very sore. He’ll keep icing it tonight. We’re all hoping it’s not a break or a crack.”
Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, watched the injury closely. During his time with Delhi Capitals in the IPL, he saw Pant in action. Ponting said the swelling right after the injury worries him a lot. He hopes it’s not a broken foot.
“Pant barely put weight on his foot. He rolled around for 6 to 8 minutes before they brought the cart,” Ponting explained. “From my experience, swelling can be a warning sign. I’ve hurt a small bone in my foot before. They’re fragile bones.” He added, “If it’s broken, he’s out of the match. If it’s not, they’ll do everything they can to get him back. Hopefully, he stays away from reverse sweeps for now.”
At the end of play, India’s score was 264 for 4 runs, with Jadeja and Thakur batting. Ponting said India will miss Pant’s skills. He can change a game quickly and put pressure on the opposition.
“Considering the match situation, Shardul played well. But Pant’s ability to turn things around will be hard to replace,” Ponting said. “He has the power to shift momentum fast. Indian fans should hope it’s not as bad as it looks. If he can’t play anymore, it could hurt India’s chances a lot, not just in this game, but in the series as well.”
