Sharma’s Heart Set on Home World Cup
4 months ago | 5 Views
Chandigarh: Abhishek Sharma, a left-handed batter, has excelled in the shortest format ever since his time with India's U-19 squad and the T20I team. The Amritsar opener has gotten up by playing for Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad. He will be a contender for a spot in the Indian squad when they host the World Cup next year since he has two centuries and two fifties in his 17 T20Is. He discusses the previous year in an interview.
Extracts:
What changes have you experienced over the past year that have led to your T20I debut and a score of 135 in your second match?
A lot has occurred in a short period of time. It was a touching experience to make my debut in India, but it's great to be able to follow it up with performances like the hundred (against Zimbabwe) and that England knock (135 in his last T20I in February). It has made me feel like I belong at this level... It inspires me, but it also makes me want to work even harder.
What has life and practice been like since the IPL?
Following IPL, I've concentrated on recuperating and perfecting minute details of my game, particularly my bowling and fitness. At this level, there isn't really an off-season.
You and Travis Head, who have been SRH openers since last year, appear to have demonstrated that IPL batting should be an all-out assault.
Our goal was simple: to go on the offensive right from the first pitch, and SRH allowed us that opportunity. We were supporting one another, which made it so much fun. Our style of play demonstrated to teams that having a fearless mindset at the outset can alter matches.

Give some insight into how Brian Lara has impacted your batting. Do you maintain contact with him?
My perspective was significantly influenced by Brian sir. He taught me how to analyze events and construct innings. All it took was seeing his composure and hearing him discuss the game to shift my viewpoint. We do stay in touch. You pay close attention when a legend like that offers advice.
What do captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir tell you about India?
They both urge me to "back yourself." GG bhai is quite serious and strategic, and he will provide you all the freedom you require. Surya bhai is laid back and encourages me to be myself.
You might be opening the innings as India hosts the T20 World Cup in 2026.
Every child's dream is to host a World Cup at home, perhaps as a front for India. However, I am aware that it is a lengthy process, and I must continue to perform. I want to be at my best when that moment comes.
You played junior cricket with Shubman Gill, who is now the Test captain...
Shubman and I have known each other for a long time, dating back to the U-16, U-19, and Punjab and Indian youth squads. I have personally witnessed his work ethic. He has consistently been one step ahead. I'm motivated to set my sights higher by his adventure.
Did you see his 269 and 161 at Edgbaston and how India triumphed under his guidance?
I couldn't take my eyes off the television. His 269 was outstanding; he made it seem so simple. I was rooting for that 300! That's the Shubman I know, the way he conducted himself with such composure and confidence. I was really happy to see him win.
In what ways has Yuvraj Singh contributed to your professional development?
Yuvi paaji is like an older brother. I appreciate his candor. One of the primary reasons I began hitting the ball in the manner that I do is because of him. I learned to think differently because of his guidance. He wishes for me to be the best possible version of myself.
In the most recent IPL, we hardly saw you bowl. What's your approach to left-arm spin?
I've always been sure of my bowling, but the team makeup and Impact Player law meant that I didn't do a lot of it in the IPL. With the help of my coaches, I'm putting in a lot of effort. Since that additional talent complements the group, I am always prepared to help out with the ball. I want to be a total package.
