Shardul Thakur on Gill & Pant: A Unique Test Duo

With the five-match series against England next month, Team India will begin its fourth World Test Championship cycle, marking the start of a new age in Test cricket for the team. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma quitting the format, a fresh-looking Indian squad, captained by Shubman Gill, will be looking to get off to a strong start during the changeover period. Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh are two new additions to the squad, and Rishabh Pant has been chosen to serve as Gill's deputy. Veteran bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur also rejoins the squad, and Karun Nair makes his comeback after an eight-year absence.

Shardul had a strong season for Mumbai in the local scene the year before. Shardul was a top candidate for the 18-member squad because of his prowess with the ball and his accomplishments with the bat in the lower-middle order, given that England's bowling circumstances favored pace bowling. In an interview with RevSportz, Shardul discussed the potential of playing under Pant and Gill, with whom he has shared the Test locker room since their respective introductions in the format.

"Without a doubt, they are both major players and the future of India. They have quite distinct personalities: Rishabh is cheerful and upbeat, while Shubman is a collected and somber individual who takes the game seriously. However, this is their unique selling point in their own way. Shardul stated that they are exceptionally talented players for the future of India because they have made contributions to the game at the highest and most important levels.

Both will have a wealth of experience in captaincy, albeit in white-ball formats, and will take on leadership roles. Pant captains the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, while Gill heads the Gujarat Titans. The opener has also captained India in a five-T20I series against Zimbabwe last year, while Pant led the side during a series in the shortest format against South Africa in 2022.
