Shardul Thakur Shares Candid Thoughts on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s Retirement Decisions
6 months ago | 5 Views
With legendary players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma declaring unexpected Test retirements, Team India has entered a transitional period in red-ball cricket. In their most recent red-ball season, India went through a challenging period, losing two consecutive series against New Zealand at home and then against Australia Down Under. The 0-3 clean sweep against New Zealand at home was an eye-opener for Rohit Sharma and his team. Nevertheless, their fortunes did not change during the Australian tour, where they lost 1-3, which also meant that they were excluded from the World Test Championship Final.
Following subpar performances in both series, seasoned hitters Kohli and Rohit came under scrutiny, sparking new criticism. They shocked everyone by declaring their retirement from Test cricket only a few months later, before the England tour.
The Indian team will begin their new World Test Championship with five Tests against England because the BCCI has already announced Shubman Gill as the captain for the major trip.
Prior to the England series, Shardul Thakur, who was returning to the Test team, expressed his opinion on the surprising retirements of two legendary cricketers. Although he recognized it as a personal choice for each player, he also observed that such choices frequently arise when one feels that they can no longer control the format as they once did.
“They are the most senior figures in the game, but such decisions are personal. According to Thakur, it happens when they believe they are no longer able to contribute or guide the format as they once did.
'Now Ravindra Jadeja is the most experienced'
In addition to the presence of seasoned players in the locker room, the fast-bowling all-rounder mentioned that Ravindra Jadeja would be the most seasoned player on the tour.
"Having a healthy combination of senior and junior players in the team delivers thriving results, and there is a lot of protection when senior players are around. Currently, Jaddu has the most experience. Everybody will be put to the test on this tour, with new duties, such as leadership roles, he said.
The weather, in Shardul's opinion, would be the greatest obstacle for them throughout the entire trip, he added, mentioning that he had previously played in England.
“It’s a new challenge, but we have the talent. Shardul advised that young players should take advantage of this chance to establish their own legacy.
"In my opinion, the weather is the biggest problem in England. You can experience all three weathers in a single day. The temperature drops drastically. The weather is pleasant and warm when the sun is out, and it begins to drizzle again when it's cloudy," Thakur stated.
