Although Shane Gillis appears to have had a rough start, he will be hosting the ESPYS 2025 ceremony. On X (formerly Twitter), his first speech has been criticized extensively.

At the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards (ESPY), Gillis made a hilarious Jeffrey Epstein joke, claiming that the joke might have never existed. This was a reference to President Donald Trump of the United States who insisted that the Epstein Files were a hoax.

Despite the topical humour, his speech has not gone down well with many, taking to X to criticise Gillis.

"Who decided #ShaneGillis was a good fit to host the ESPYS?" one X user posted in response to Gillis' speech. The public has generally not been very favorable of it. It's really uncomfortable. These individuals are hard-working athletes. Not the Hollywood aristocracy. The humor is missing.

Another person said, "Watching the ESPYS." I had never heard of Shane Gillis prior to this evening. His behavior is awful. Major fail; whose notion was it that he host?

A third person said, "It only took Shane Gillis 20 seconds to be a complete catastrophe #espys."

In the meanwhile, one user appeared to enjoy Gillis's ostensibly underwhelming speech, stating, "Rushed to my television to watch Shane Gillis go Lindbergh on his ESPYs monologue and he did not disappoint. A legendary meltdown. I have no idea who gave that the okay, but it will be remembered forever.

Others, though, were more candid, stating that Gillis gave a nice speech, but that the audience members were 'uptight' and 'self-important.' Another observer remarked that Gillis' humor probably went over the heads of the 'dumb athletes.'
