Scottie Scheffler Claims Maiden Open Victory

India, July 21—Sunday's 153rd Open Championship was the golf equivalent of a rout. As the world stood back and watched Scottie Scheffler's triumph march, no one arrived to cause him any problems. No. 1 strolled to his first Open championship and fourth major victory of his career.
The American began his last round at Royal Portrush Golf Club with a four-stroke lead over China's Haotong Li, but the rest of the field was too far behind to take advantage of his uncharacteristic errors on the front nine.
Scheffler's 17-under par total of 267 was made up of his two Masters victories (2022 and 2024) and his 68, which was his fourth consecutive round in the 60s, as the current PGA champion.
Today, I experienced a great deal of inner serenity and a great sense of self-assurance. In a greenside interview following his triumph, a radiant Scheffler stated, "I bounced back despite having a hiccup on the eighth hole. Every day is a battle and I did well."
The runner-up to Scheffler at this year's PGA Championship, American Harris English, was once again the bridesmaid. The 35-year-old Georgian ended his day with a round of 66 that featured an eagle and four birdies. He came in third in his first Open appearance, after winning last week's Genesis Scottish Open, completing a fantastic debut visit to the UK. He was one stroke ahead of his compatriot Chris Gotterup (67).
"The fact that Scottie is the only man who has defeated me in two majors—this week and at the PGA—means that I am playing well. The globe only needs a bit of tidying, the world said. Number nineteen, English.
"However, one of my two aims for this year was to get on that Ryder Cup team and make it to the TOUR Championship, and I'm hoping that I've made myself a little bit closer to that, and I can get in that top six (in Ryder Cup Rankings) to lock up a spot."
local legend and global At 10-under overall, Rory McIlroy, the No. 2 player in the world, was tied for seventh place after making a double bogey on the tenth hole.
At 11-under, Wyndham Clark (65), from the US, Matt Fitzpatrick (69), from England, and Haotong Li (70), from China, were all tied for fourth place.
Although Tiger Woods' eight-stroke victory at the 2000 edition in St. Andrews was the greatest winning margin since 1913, Old Tom Morris' 13-stroke victory in 1862 is still the record. Cameron Smith (2022) and Henrik Stenson (2016) both have the lowest winning score of 264. Both documents risked annihilation.
Nevertheless, Scheffler was only able to get pars on the second and seventh pars 5s on the front nine, which were both averaging far below their par. On the eighth hole, he then smashed his second shot into the wall of the fairway bunker, resulting in his lone double bogey since arriving in the UK this year.
Xander Schauffele, the man who lost his Open championship to Scheffler, honored the astounding supremacy of his close buddy.
"He's amazing. Schauffele, who finished with a 68 and a tie for seventh place, said, "He truly is."
Scottie is kind of seizing that throne of supremacy, and I don't believe we anticipated that someone as dominant as Tiger (Woods) would come through the golfing scene so soon. He's not even on a run. For more than two years, he has been consistently excelling.
"It's hard to beat him, and it's awful for the rest of us when you see his name at the top of the leaderboard."
In the meantime, Bryson DeChambeau rebounded brilliantly, finishing inside or just outside the top 10 after posting his best round of the tournament, a seven-under 64. After being seven over par after Thursday's opening round, the LIV Golf star finished with a nine-under total after shooting 65, 68, and 64.
DeChambeau remarked after a rapturous welcome from the crowd in the massive 18th grandstand:
"I was really proud of the way I turned it around and gave myself some hope in the third round, after I was 3-under," said the Captain of the Crushers GC, which also includes India's Anirban Lahiri.
I told myself, "This time I'm going to do something different. I've been concentrating on improving my character and behavior in various circumstances. Regardless of what happens, I shifted my mind to say that I will go all out and attack like it's Sunday of a significant championship, which is exactly what I did.
