Sabalenka’s Wimbledon Rage: Smashes Net, Nearly Calls for Early Exit

Universe In a thrilling quarterfinal victory over No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon, she successfully controlled her emotions and prevented making the same errors as she did in the French Open final. Number 104 Tuesday was Laura Siegemund's birthday. However, the Belarusian was clearly annoyed throughout most of the game, and at one point she even considered the possibility that her 2025 London campaign would be over.

Following Siegemund's victory in the first set, there were signs of impatience. "She pushed me so much and, honestly, after the first set, I was just looking at my box thinking: 'Guys, book the tickets, I think we're about to leave this beautiful city and country,'" Sabalenka said following the match.

The 37-year-old broke Sabalenka twice in the decisive set, leaving her visibly furious, even though she fought back valiantly in the second set to regain command. She was attempting to make up for a 1-3 deficit in the third set when she hit a flawless down-the-line winner into an empty left lane, only to have it go wide, eliciting gasps from the audience. However, Centre Court's response quickly turned into disapproving murmurs when Sabalenka, in a moment of meltdown, furiously smashed the top of the net with her racquet. Tracy Austin, a BBC commentator, stated: "That's what happens when Siegemund is so good at defense - players, opponents start to press too close to the lines out of respect."

Before Sabalenka regained her composure by holding serve and then getting the break back en route to surviving a major scare, the chair umpire stepped in to help quiet the audience.

Only at Wimbledon has Sabalenka never participated in a championship game. At Wimbledon, the 27-year-old was defeated in the semifinals in 2021 and 2023. If she defeats No. 13 Amanda Anisimova of the United States on Thursday, though, she will be able to turn things around this week. By defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 7-6(9), Anisimova advanced to her first big semifinal since the 2019 French Open, where she was just 17 years old.

In the singles draw, Sabalenka is the only remaining player who is among the top five seeds. After winning the French Open last month, Coco Gauff had a stunning first-round loss, as did third seed Jessica Pegula and Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen, and Jasmine Paolini, who came in second last year, was eliminated after the second round.

Only Iga Swiatek and Mirra Andreeva are still competing among the top ten. Swiatek will play No. 19 Liudmila Samsonova to advance to the semifinals in London for the first time in her career, while the No. 7 seed will face Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinal on Wednesday.
