Roland Garros Glory: Alcaraz Wins After Intense Duel
5 months ago | 5 Views
New Delhi: With the score at 3–5, 0–40 in the fourth set of the 2025 Roland Garros final, Carlos Alcaraz is about to lose the match and the game. Alcaraz disregarded all warnings, whereas many others would have given up. He made his strokes fearlessly and earned 13 of the next 14 points.
In the fifth, when Alcaraz was serving for the match, Sinner retaliated by discovering a gear that he himself was unaware of. Marathons have a way of bringing out something from the depths of one's being, and this one was no different.
Nobody mentioned percentages or shot quality by the conclusion of the game. The discussion had strayed into the realm of unquantifiable guts and glory. The tennis was unreal, the audience was cheering, and the players were raising their fists.A new age had begun on the red clay.
It was destined to be exceptional. The very first time the two finest athletes of the generation face each other in a Major final. It occasionally sets a trend, but more frequently, it encourages both sides to improve.
However, how do you improve this if you're Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner? In five sets—4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2)—the 22-year-old Spaniard was able to overcome the Italian's outstanding steel consistency with his maverick genius.

The longest Roland Garros men's final in history lasted five hours and twenty-nine minutes, beating the four-hour and forty-two-minute match between a 17-year-old Mats Wilander and Guillermo Vilas in 1982.
World Following his victories at the US Open last year and the Australian Open in January, No. 1 Sinner was seeking his first Roland Garros championship and third straight Major title. In contrast, Carlos Alcaraz was the defending champion, a four-time major champion, and he was on a four-game winning streak against Sinner coming into the final. Additionally, neither had ever suffered a loss in a Major final (Sinner 3-3 and Alcaraz 4-4).
That alone would have been enough to keep the majority of tennis enthusiasts on the edge of their seats. The mouthwatering contrast in styles, however, was something else. Alcaraz, the emotional powerhouse, against Sinner, the collected perfectionist.
Sinner had been striking the more consistent ball throughout the tournament, but when Alcaraz gets rolling, that can mean very little.
The unpredictability of everything and the angles that Alcaraz generates appear to throw off the nearly robotic Sinner. The Italian Superman's kryptonite.
The match's opening game lasted twelve minutes, with Sinner serving, and was just a taste of what was to come. "It's fun and not fun," Sinner said about the chance of facing Alacarz in the semi-final.
It's enjoyable since it brings out the best in Sinner. However, Alcaraz occasionally elevates his game to a point where, for the time being, he is the only one who lives there, making it less enjoyable.
However, Sinner overcame his initial reluctance and began to play in a manner that had seen him defeat opponents en route to a 18-1 record in 2025. At Majors, he was also on a 20-game winning streak. The Italian won the first set 6-4 in 63 minutes, even though Alcaraz was still hot and cold.
Alcaraz, however, loses sets. He required four sets in four of his six matches on his route to the championship. Although he is a momentum player in every way, Sinner prevented him from discovering that in the second game as well. He displayed signs and hesitated while serving for the set, but he won the tie-breaker after 66 minutes.
It might be paralyzing to be down 2-0 in a final, but Alcaraz kept faith in himself and discovered a different route. Although his forehand receives all the accolades, it was the backhand—especially the down-the-line variation—that helped him win the match here.
All of a sudden, Sinner was under pressure as his legs moved a little quicker and his groundstrokes became more powerful. He virtually ignored the scoreboard. Alcaraz won the third set in 49 minutes.
On most days, the two are quite similar, but Alcaraz appears to be better at playing the big points; he seems to want to play them more than Sinner. In a game of this caliber, even the slightest edge counts.
The fourth set saw a steady start. Both players holding their service games until Sinner took the break to lead 4-3. An easy hold made it 5-3 and when he was leading 0-40 in the next game, he had three match points to wrap up the match. So many others would have thrown the towel in but Alcaraz instead, threw caution to the winds.
He won 13 of the next 14 points to change the flow of the match and make it 6-5 in the fourth before finally taking the set in the tie-breaker. By this point, it felt like the momentum had shifted.
Alcaraz started moving better, raising his fists on points and the crowd started cheering for him even louder. Sinner, though looking calm, was clearly the player under more pressure.
But somehow, Sinner hung it there despite going down a break early. He was tiring and you could see that in his walk to his towel box but this time he returned the favour to break Alcaraz as the Spaniard was serving for the match. It’s never over till it’s over.
Now, at 5-5 in the fifth, the battle resumed on even terms. Sinner, once again betraying nothing, and Carlos, looking a little cold all of a sudden.
But then suddenly the Spaniard picked himself up again and cruised through the final set tie-break to win what will go down as one of the greatest finals in recent history.
As they say, sport truly is the best form of reality tv, for no script could have ever dreamed this up. They wouldn’t even dare.
