Rohit Sharma: 2024 T20 World Cup 'Return Gift' for Australia After Last Year's Final Defeat

The T20 World Cup 2024 match against Australia was all about redemption for Rohit Sharma and Team India, not only about moving on to the semi-finals. The wounds of November 19, 2023, when Australia crushed India's aspirations of winning the ODI World Cup on home soil, remained open. And India seized the ideal chance to repay the favor in their last Super 8 match.

In an interview with Star Sports, Rohit disclosed what had been brewing behind the Indian team's composed demeanor during his blistering 92-run innings.

"The rage was always there. It was in the back of my mind," Rohit confessed. "Inhone hamaara 19 November kharaab kar diya (They ruined our 19 November). We should reserve something for them. We should also give them a nice gift."

Despite not losing a single game during the ODI World Cup, India ultimately succumbed to a relentless Australian squad in the championship match. India understood that the stakes were doubled when the two teams reconnected on the T20 arena because the memory of the six-wicket loss in Ahmedabad was still fresh. In addition to their semi-final berth being at stake, a victory would have put an end to Australia's competition after their stunning defeat by Afghanistan.

“We kept talking about it in the dressing room,” Rohit Sharma explained, highlighting the emotional foundation of India's effort. "These ideas are running through your head. However, when you are at bat, you are not thinking, "I want to knock them out of the tournament."

Rohit Sharma to captain India in this year's T20 World Cup

Under Rohit, India won two victories.

India played with concentration, shattering Australia's hopes and paving the way for themselves and Afghanistan to make it to the knockout stage. After batting first, the side destroyed the Australians 205/4 in 20 overs before limiting them to 181/7 to secure a spot in the semifinals.

That triumph proved to be a crucial turning point in India's campaign for the T20 World Cup. After a tense championship match against South Africa, they maintained their momentum through the knockout rounds and ultimately raised the trophy. India's 12-year wait for an ICC championship also came to an end with the victory for Rohit Sharma's team. India also won the Champions Trophy earlier this February, defeating New Zealand in the championship game, under Rohit's leadership.
