Following the Test retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant was selected as vice-captain. In the first Test against England in Leeds, he played the position with comfort, helping new captain Shubman Gill. In the first Test, Pant surpassed 100 runs in both innings, scoring two tons.

Pant's story is an inspiration for many people, as he lived through a near-fatal automobile accident in 2022. When Pant scored his ton in the first innings, he also grabbed everyone's attention by executing a graceful somersault. When he scored his IPL century as the captain of LSG, he behaved in the same way.

To The Telegraph, Pant's surgeon, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, discussed his somersault celebration. "Rishabh trained as a gymnast. Even though he looks big, he is actually very nimble and has a lot of flexibility," he stated.

"And, that's why he's been turning those somersaults lately.

“It’s a well-rehearsed and perfected movement – albeit superfluous!,” he said.

Pant was unable to play for about 16 months due to the incident. "The risk of death is extremely high in an accident like this, where the car actually overturns and blows up," Pardiwala said when he discussed the injuries.

“When your knee dislocates, and all the ligaments break, there's a high chance that the nerve or the main blood vessel will also be injured. In the event of blood vessel injury, you usually have between four and six hours to reestablish the blood flow.

"If not, you run the danger of losing your limb. Despite suffering a severe high-velocity knee dislocation, it was incredibly fortunate that his blood artery was not damaged, he said.

Pant scored 134 runs in 178 deliveries during the first innings at Leeds. In contrast, he struck 118 runs off 140 balls in the second innings. India gained a lot from Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and even Shubman Gill. India was defeated by five wickets in spite of their outstanding performance at the plate.
