Rishabh Pant’s Frustration at Umpire Sparks ICC Code of Conduct Probe

5 months ago | 5 Views

Following his contentious dispute with on-field umpire Paul Reiffel on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test against England in Leeds, India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant may be subject to sanctions for violating two clauses of the ICC Code of Conduct. Former cricketers Ravi Shastri and Mark Butcher even denounced the action on television, calling it "needless."

After Harry Brook hit Mohammed Siraj for a boundary on the penultimate ball of England's first innings at Headingley on Sunday, the incident occurred. As he approached the umpire to have the ball examined, Pant seemed visibly dissatisfied with its state. When Reiffel returned it to Pant after testing its form using the ball gauge, he appeared pleased. However, the Indian celebrity appeared "frustrated" as he threw the ball away with his backhand and raged off. The audience booed Pant right away.

"It's a definite sign that nothing is happening when you begin to wish to switch the ball occasionally. We desire action. "And that was frustration from Pant," Shastri stated in the commentary.

Butcher, however, emphasized the umpire's reaction to Pant's behavior, saying, "I'm not sure there was any need for that. Paul Reiffel probably didn't appreciate it very much, though we know he's a showman and part of that is probably in order to get a reaction from the crowd."

Will Rishabh Pant receive a penalty from the ICC?

During his tense conversation with the umpire, Pant probably broke two rules of the Code of Conduct. The vice-captain of India may face charges for breaking, which has to do with 'showing dissent at an umpire's decision during an international match.' Under clause '(a) excessive, obvious disappointment with an Umpire's decision, and (h) arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion with the Umpire about his/her decision,' he may be accused with a Level 1 or 2 offense.

Article 2.9, which deals with "Throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match," was the other article that Pant broke.

In actuality, the umpire in India made several checks as Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah were observed debating the situation on numerous occasions.

After the third day, India was ahead by 96 runs in Leeds, having scored 90/2.
