Rishabh Pant Explains Indian Team's Unseen Irritation Before Lord's Test

India's vice-captain Rishabh Pant did not hesitate to express his views regarding the Dukes ball utilized in the current Test series against England, aligning himself with a wave of discontent from the Indian team. Following Shubman Gill's remarks about the ball's rapid loss of shape, Pant reiterated this concern while injecting a bit of humor, all the while advocating for the standardization of the gauges employed.
"The gauge (for measuring the balls) should remain consistent (whether it’s Dukes or Kookaburra). However, it would be preferable if it were smaller (laughs)," Pant remarked during the press conference.
"The balls are causing significant issues," he continued. The wicketkeeper-batter, known for his outspoken nature both on and off the field, appeared visibly frustrated with the unpredictable behavior of the red ball throughout the two Tests thus far.

"From what I’ve observed, the ball is becoming de-shaped excessively. This has never occurred to me in this manner. It is undoubtedly frustrating for the players since each ball behaves differently. When it softens, it sometimes does not perform as expected," Pant elaborated, detailing the challenges bowlers face in gaining any advantage once the initial shine diminishes.
The shape-related problems have resulted in frequent interruptions, with bowlers and captains often approaching the umpires to request ball replacements, a situation that is uncommon during an English summer. As the match dynamics increasingly favor the batters after the new-ball phase, the Dukes' established reputation for reliable seam movement is evidently suffering.

In the second Test at Edgbaston, India opted for a lineup of three pacers and two spinners, a strategy that proved effective in their commanding 336-run victory. However, Pant remained reticent regarding team selection for the upcoming third Test at Lord’s.
"We will find out by tomorrow whether it will be 3-1 or 3-2. Observing the wicket for two days can sometimes alter its appearance, and the moisture levels may also decrease," he stated.
