Rishabh Pant Checks Shubman Gill for Premature Stump Mic Decision: ‘Don’t Decide Too Soon’

During India's first innings at Edgbaston, the stump mic caught a moment that provided a clear picture of the on-field events, with Shubman Gill leading the way with a tenacious century and Rishabh Pant posing a brief threat throughout his time at the crease. The pair could be heard adjusting their strategy in real time as the game's momentum changed and the ball became softer, providing a revealing insight into how India's batters were responding to the string of collapses that plagued them in the opening Test.

"We'll see on the phone. Don't make any decisions in advance." "We'll keep one call," Pant was overheard telling Gill during their short time at the crease. Pant noted that the ball had lost some of its hardness and was no longer carrying well through the off-side, making rapid singles more hazardous. The conversation followed.

Gill, who was at the non-striker's end, seemed to agree with the assessment, signaling that they wouldn't go for strong singles. But Pant, ever intuitive yet clear-headed, warned against drawing conclusions. Don't decide the conclusion in advance; instead, make the call right away.

Gill was playing a captain's innings based on patience, and he remained undefeated at 114 at the end of Day 1 after scoring his second century of the series. Although Pant was disregarded for 25 minutes after facing Shoaib Bashir for a short period, he had previously displayed glimpses of his will and power.

At the time, the game scenario was quite precarious. With the lower order exposed early in the previous Test and wickets falling in a cluster, India needed to be in command of every moment.

Gill's century

Due to his team selection after pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was rested, Gill was under pressure, but the captain played a stubborn knock, rarely made a mistake, and wore down the English bowlers with assured strokes.

Gill hit his seventh test century, the slowest of his career, in 199 deliveries, but it was nonetheless commanding given the circumstances. He ended the day undefeated on 114, accompanied by Ravindra Jadeja, who was still at 41 not out. The pair will be hoping to avoid a recurrence of the previous Test, when India had a strong opening day but then suffered a lower-order collapse, as India finished the day at 310/5.
