On the second day of the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham, Rishabh Pant assumed the leadership of the Indian team from Shubman Gill as they began to defend a massive 587. Gill, who spent almost five sessions at the plate and hit a historic double century, was not on the field when England began their innings. Since the Headingley Test, he had been experiencing a little discomfort from a treatment he was receiving for his back.

Rishabh Pant, the chosen vice-captain, was confirmed to have taken over the captaincy duties when he was observed ringing in the changes in Akash Deep's opening over, even though senior pro KL Rahul has been handling all the talking at India's huddle, as he has been doing in this Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

However, Pant did not have to lead the team for very long since Shubman Gill returned to the pitch after the second over. India also had success as soon as Gill returned to the game. Throughout this Test match, he has served as India's good luck charm.

On a good length, Akash Deep sent one to Ben Duckett from around the wicket, but Ben Duckett's response was a hard-handed one. Gill was stationed at the slip cordon when the ball went toward the outside edge. He grasped a sharp catch after making a quick movement to his left.

After that, Ollie Pope, who is ranked third in England, was at fault for closing his bat face far too soon. Although it took him two tries, KL Rahul caught the ball on the outside. Akash Deep gave India an amazing start by dismissing previous match centurions Duckett and Pope for a duck.

India scored a strong 587 all out in their first innings thanks to a traditional maiden double hundred by captain Shubman Gill. Gill (269 from 387 balls) led India's batting attack, with notable support from Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Ravindra Jadeja (89). In addition, Gill was the first Indian and Asian captain to ever record a double century in a Test match in England. The captain also broke Sunil Gavaskar's record of 221 runs at the Oval in 1979, which was the highest individual score by an Indian batsman on English soil.

Gill's 269 was also the highest score by an Indian captain, beating Virat Kohli's 254. Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir collected three wickets for 167 runs for England.
