The start of the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2 match between the Punjab Kings and the Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad on Sunday was interrupted by an unexpected rainstorm. The weather on game day had posed little risk, despite reports of a little drizzle the day before. Just before the first ball could be delivered, the rain unexpectedly arrived, postponing the match after Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl under a gloomy sky. The players then lined up to take the field.

In half an hour, the rain turned into a drizzle and stopped altogether, and soon after, many PBKS players entered the pitch. Arshdeep Singh immediately noticed the shift in circumstances and warmed up by rolling his arm over. Ricky Ponting, the head coach, was seen engaging in a heated discussion with the umpires, obviously worried about the pitch's condition and the weather's unpredictability.

The side's spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal, who had been out of the lineup for the previous several games due to an injury, was also speaking with the umpire as he rejoined for the Qualifier 2.

However, the players' relief was short-lived. The rain returned shortly after, compelling the ground crew to retract the main cover and driving the players back into the locker room.

The victor will play RCB

Punjab Kings will advance to the championship game since they placed ahead of Mumbai Indians in the points standings if the rain continues and causes a washout. While MI placed fourth, the PBKS ended first in the league standings. Hardik Pandya's team overcame the Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator game, scheduling a meeting with Punjab in Ahmedabad.

In the meanwhile, Punjab suffered a surprising 8-wicket defeat in their home stadium in Qualifier 1 against RCB. They were bowled out for 101 in 14.1 overs, with RCB easily chasing the score thanks to an amazing half-century by opening batsman Phil Salt.

The season finale will also take place in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, June 3, and the supporters will be praying that the rain stays away for the crucial championship match.
