Ravindra Jadeja Breaks Silence on CSK Captaincy Drama: ‘All the Blame Always Came to Me’
6 months ago | 5 Views
When MS Dhoni abruptly resigned as captain the day before the season opener in 2022, handing over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja, the Chennai Super Kings made their first significant move toward transition. But within a month, the hopes were dashed when Jadeja's performance dropped dramatically, and Chennai only managed to win two of the first eight games. Halfway through the season, Jadeja resigned, transferring his responsibilities back to Dhoni, which ultimately led to a significant fiasco, with rumours suggesting a schism between the two veteran players.
For the first time since the incident, Jadeja spoke frankly about his "difficult" tenure as Chennai's captain, acknowledging that he might have handled things differently.
"It was challenging. Every ball in T20 cricket is an occurrence. For me, it was an experience, even though it was a quick game. I could have done a better job. If your team isn't performing well as a captain, the blame is always on the captaincy. Thinking, bowling changes, fielding chances. Regrettably, the team wasn't performing well. On the 'Kutti Stories With Ash' YouTube program, Jadeja told Chennai teammate Ravichandran Ashwin that it wasn't rocket science if we were winning and everyone was pitching in.
During his time as captain, what did Jadeja do?
Jadeja was compelled to step down from his captaincy position in order to "focus more on his game" and "requested Dhoni to lead CSK" as a result of a subpar season in Chennai and a decline in his own form. It was said that before making the decision, Jadeja had spoken with head coach Stephen Fleming and Dhoni. N Srinivasan, the owner of the Super Kings, was also contacted about the matter.
In comparison to the 459 runs Jadeja had in the prior two seasons, when he averaged 57.3 runs and had a strike rate of 157.7, this was a significant drop in form. Overall, in eight games, Jadeja only scored 112 runs, averaging 22.4 runs at a strike rate of 121.7. In contrast, his bowling suffered as well. During his captaincy, he only took five wickets at a rate of 42.6 and an economy rate of 8.1, despite having collected 19 wickets in the previous two seasons at an economy rate of 7.7.
