R Ashwin on Kohli’s Absence: ‘India Bigger Than One Player’

Undoubtedly, Virat Kohli's retirement has dimmed Test cricket somewhat, and it may need the resurgence of one or two other players to shine it up once more. However, Ravichandran Ashwin is not yet willing to assign responsibility for the history, present, and future of Test cricket to any one person. He believes that the players are made by the game, not vice versa.

"I don't believe that anyone who has played or will play the game is superior to the game itself. When asked about Virat Kohli's role as an "ambassador" of Test cricket and whether the next generation can help keep the format popular—something that has been constantly questioned since the quick rise of T20 cricket—Ashwin told RevSportz, "Nobody that walks the park does good for the game; the game does good or bad by them."

Kohli led the Indian Test squad at a time when the popularity of red-ball cricket was already being impacted by T20Is and franchise leagues. Nevertheless, he strongly promoted the significance of the format and continually urged young players everywhere to gauge their success by their Test match performances.

"I love Virat, but he has come and gone; he has played and left the game in a wonderful state. "And now, it is for someone else to take it forward," Ashwin stated.

‘Looking forward to the attitude of Pant and Gill’: Ashwin

The former India all-rounder, the first of the current Indian cricket greats to declare his retirement this year, stated that the legacy established by Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli will be carried on by the next generation of Indian players under new captain Shubman Gill and vice captain Rishabh Pant.

"Now anticipating the mindset and ambition of players like Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Dhruv Jurel to carry it forward. We'll see if they can duplicate the fervent enthusiasm that players like Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar displayed on the pitch over the years. "That said, it's everyone's responsibility on the team to demonstrate that energy and enthusiasm," he continued.

Kohli chose to declare his retirement from Test cricket a few days after Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, said farewell to the longest version of the game. The selections were made hardly a week before India revealed their lineup for the England tour. For the first time in almost 15 years, India's Test squad will be without Kohli, Rohit, and Ashwin on a crucial overseas trip.

Although Ashwin will undoubtedly miss the experience of 300 Test matches, he is eager to see how the Shubman Gill team performs in the five-match Test series that begins on June 20.

"I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in this fascinating Test series." Current cricketers have an astonishing amount of exposure. Sai Sudharsan, who is likely to make his debut in this Test series, has really faced off against Mitchell Starc, Kagiso Rabada, Pat Cummins, Gerald Coetzee, and Josh Hazlewood. Now, he will be starting his English tour, but it won't be too strange as it would have been without the IPL. He has also competed in Surrey, therefore he has some experience playing at The Oval. The IPL is undoubtedly a factor that helps build confidence in modern players, and Vikram Solanki is his coach at Gujarat Titans. "I'm really looking forward to the Indian lads and the English lads' demeanor," he said.
