Punjab Kings Coach Clarifies Shreyas Iyer’s Reaction to India Test Omission: ‘Selection Wasn’t My Call’

Over the past 12 years, Shreyas Iyer hasn't made many mistakes. Shreyas has checked off most of the boxes, from reentering the BCCI's central contracts list to playing a crucial role in India's Champions Trophy victory and now guiding Punjab Kings to the IPL Playoffs after 11 long years. His fight against the short ball is the only thing he hasn't quite mastered. Why else wouldn't the selectors have given him a spot in India's Test team for the trip to England? Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the BCCI selection committee, did not single out Iyer's Achilles heel, instead just stating that "there's no place for him" in the team for the time being. However, Shreyas' vulnerability might be a reason why players like Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan were chosen over him.

However, Iyer's disregard for the move caused some people to wonder. Although Mohammad Kaif and Atul Wassan had doubts about the choice, it turned out that Iyer wasn't all that concerned about it. On the LiSTNR Sport podcast, Brad Haddin, the assistant coach of the Punjab Kings, was asked if Shreyas was dejected and taken aback by the news and if the team needed to rally around him to cheer him up.

We didn't need to fetch him. From the first day, he has demonstrated extreme aggression in his leadership role within the group. He is visiting camp with a genuine passion and desire to transform Punjab into a top cricket franchise. And he has accomplished that. Throughout the whole time, he has maintained a consistent line of reasoning. He has been outstanding both on and off the field with our group, as Haddin informed Adam Peacock.

Brad Haddin: People don't perceive Shreyas Iyer's hard work

Punjab Kings and their ascent in the current IPL 2025 have been solely motivated by Shreyas. Shreyas led from the front with 514 runs as PBKS ended the league stage at the top of the IPL standings with 19 victories out of 14 games and a net-run rate of 0.372, which was the highest in the league.

Many people don't realize the work he does off the field, which includes bringing the entire team together, not just the coaching staff. He's well-prepared. I love his cricketing intelligence. Since the beginning, he has been at the top of his game because he reads it well and makes decisions quickly. I am not altering any picks or anything else, Haddin stated.
