Praggnanandhaa Breaks Silence on Carlsen’s Retirement Talk After Gukesh Match

India, June 16 – Magnus Carlsen successfully defended his title and captured his seventh Norway Chess championship by winning the 2025 iteration of the tournament. His Round 6 match against D Gukesh, in which he suffered defeat to the current world champion, was a little flaw in his campaign. Carlsen was in a winning state in their Round 6 encounter as well, having previously clinched an easy victory against Gukesh in Round 1. However, Gukesh gained his first classical victory against the World due to a major mistake in the endgame. No. 1, who was completely stunned, banged the table in exasperation.

Carlsen also appeared disillusioned following his loss to Gukesh on the sidelines of the occasion, and he remarked that "maybe he should totally stop playing classical chess." "I don't think that (the game against Gukesh, not the incident) was fun," he told reporters. I must think about how to prevent it. Perhaps I should quit playing classical chess altogether. I didn't enjoy it at all. Overall, I believe I've played well in the tournament, but I don't find it enjoyable. I'm not concerned about my skill level.

Carlsen has been backed by R. Praggnanandhaa, a fellow countryman of Gukesh, since then, who has called the Norwegian "the strongest player on the planet."

He stated to Firstpost, "Magnus is certainly the strongest player on the planet, so you do need a lot of skill (to beat him), but you know, in terms of score, Magnus still has a huge score against all the Indians."

Gukesh Dommaraju breaks silence on Magnus Carlsen's reaction

"We've won some games against him, so it's not like we do particularly well against him."

Praggnanandhaa shares the opinion that 'it is possible to beat Carlsen,' but he maintains that Carlsen remains the strongest player.

"It's possible to beat him when we play, but he is still the strongest player and there is certainly this Magnus effect, which everyone calls. Like, when you get this slightly worse position, you do start getting doubts about defending this or not because you are playing against Magnus," he stated.

"But for me personally, I don't really pay attention. And also, I don't know about others, but for me, whenever I play Magnus, I get extra, extra energy to fight. I'm looking forward to battling it out, and I believe that's one of the reasons why my matches with Magnus are always so thrilling."

Praggnanandhaa reflects that the World No. 1 made an unexpected mistake in Gukesh's victory over Carlsen. "It wasn't something that was expected because Magnus doesn't usually blunder, but Gukesh also defended well," he said. I believed the match might finish in a draw while I was watching it. These mistakes occur during time trouble. However, it's surprising coming from Magnus because he typically doesn't make these errors.

Carlsen ended first in Norway Chess 2025 with 16 points, followed by Fabiano Caruana with 15.5. Gukesh, who had 14.5 points, was in third place, and Hikaru Nakamura, who had 14 points, was in fourth. Arjun Erigaisi, India No. 1, finished fifth with 13 points, while Wei Yi took sixth place with 9.5.
