Ponting on Gill: Quiet Impact, Unlike Rohit’s Style

India captain Shubman Gill revealed a completely different side to himself during the Lord's Test against England. In the third match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, tempers flared as both teams squared off. Day 3 marked the turning point in the series, with the entire Indian team, under Gill's leadership, taking on England's opening batters Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett after the pair intentionally wasted time to make sure India didn't bowl a second over before stumps.

The entire incident has now been weighed in by former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who claims that Gill's outburst was a "little out of character" but that it was only an example of a captain attempting to leave his mark on his squad.

Crawley kept retreating, so Gill yelled "grow some f*****g b***s" as she ran at the stump. The incident didn't stop there; a few balls later, the India Once again, the No. 4 hitter approached Crawley and spoke with him and Ben Duckett.

“That was a bit unlike what I've seen from Shubman in the past. Ponting told the ICC Review, "Everyone who was there watching it, and I know you would know him quite well, that's not what he's normally like."

The captain is defending his team, demonstrating that it is now his team, and showing us how we will play the game; he is also, I believe, trying to give a little bit back. It may be challenging to perform in the UK. Even though they adore their game, the crowds may be as dangerous to play in as any place in the world, he said.

"Pressure might reach a captain."

Ponting also noted that the strain of representing one's nation can always get to a captain, regardless of how much expertise they have playing in the UK.

The former Australia captain also thinks that Gill was attempting to leave his mark on his own squad, much as Virat Kohli did when he first assumed the captaincy from MS Dhoni.

Ponting also mentioned Rohit and how he never displayed "outwardly aggressive" behavior toward the opposing team when discussing Gill and Virat Kohli.

"When you're in a big series, like an Ashes series or when it's England and India, the media there always feel like they're right on top of your back as well. That, in my opinion, is the beginning of him making his mark on his squad. In many ways, Rohit (Sharma) was probably never as visibly aggressive, particularly against opposing players, as Virat (Kohli) was, according to Ponting.

“I know that Rohit would frequently be harsh with his teammates and attempt to bring the best out of them in that manner. However, last week, I really enjoyed watching Shubman defend his convictions in the game,” he said.

With a 2-1 advantage, England is now in the lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The next match between the two sides will take place in the Manchester Test, which begins on Wednesday, July 23.
