To put Australia on the road to another win in an ICC tournament under his captaincy, Pat Cummins took matters into his own hands. However, during the World Test Championship final's second day, his bowling spoke for itself and changed the course of the match; he ended with 6-28 in South Africa's first innings.

Cummins' performance was historic, and it marked his 300th career Test wicket. By clearing the last wicket of the innings, Cummins also became the only captain to ever take six wickets in a single innings at the historic venue. Additionally, he was just the fourth captain in history to take five wickets in an innings at Lord's.

Cummins began by clearing Wiaan Mulder through his gate on the first day evening. On the morning of the second day, he returned to get his counterpart, catching Temba Bavuma at cover with a diving Marnus Labuschagne.

But it was his activities after lunch that really demonstrated his skill. Everything came crashing down after South Africa gained some momentum before the break. Cummins completed his five-wicket haul by removing Bedingham, the established batter, after removing Verreynne and Jansen in the same over.

Cummins also made history by becoming the first captain to take a five-fer in an ICC final and the player with the most five-fers as a captain in Test cricket.

"More than I could ask for..."

Cummins pondered his performance during the innings break, saying, "They were batting pretty well when we walked in at lunch, so it was good to get a first innings lead." These were the second-best numbers of his Test career.

Cummins spoke about the significance of hitting the 300 milestone. Cummins joins the 300 club as its 40th member and eighth Australian.

Cummins said, "It's more than I could have asked for," when asked if he thought he would hit the milestone in one innings. 300 is a significant milestone for any fast bowler, and he has overcome minor aches and injuries to perform admirably on a variety of occasions.

Cummins' actions guaranteed that Australia took full advantage of their incredible bowling display on day one evening, dismissing South Africa for 138 and grabbing a 74-run lead in the first innings.
