Pat Cummins’ Baggy Green Disappears After Australia Captain Breaks Cap Tradition
5 months ago | 5 Views
During the current Test series against the West Indies, Australian captain Pat Cummins has found himself in a rare off-field bind. Just hours before the start of the series in Barbados, Cummins' brand-new Baggy Green cap, a beloved symbol of Australian Test cricket, was said to have vanished in what seems to be a case of bad timing and perplexing enigma.
With the new cap, which he had chosen to debut instead of mending his old one from 2011, Cummins arrived for a pre-series picture session with West Indies captain Roston Chase. Prior to his Test debut against South Africa, he was given that original cap, which had seen years of use and weather, which led the captain to look for a fresh start with a new Albion-made version, one of the last produced before the cap-making rights moved to Kookaburra in 2016.
In Australian cricket, Cummins' choice to get a new loose green was also regarded as a break with tradition. Some former greats, such as Ricky Ponting, Steve Waugh, and David Warner, opted to wear their original Baggy Green hats throughout their careers, accepting the wear and tear as a symbol of their pride.
The Daily Telegraph, on the other hand, published a story claiming that Cummins's new cap vanished at some point between the team picture shoot and the toss. The Aussie captain was left with no choice but to wear his old, tattered Baggy Green for the first Test—the same hat he had chosen to retire—since there was no sign of it. As he guided Australia to a convincing 159-run win at Kensington Oval, this worn hat sat atop his head.
With no changes to Cummins' performances
With the exception of a wardrobe malfunction, Cummins kept performing well on the field. The pacer took three wickets in the game, backing up Josh Hazlewood, who destroyed the West Indies squad with a five-wicket haul in the second innings.
Interestingly, Cummins is not the only Australian player to have suffered such a loss. When his own Baggy Green went missing last year after his luggage was taken, David Warner had previously issued a public appeal on social media. In a similar vein, the legendary Greg Chappell once made a public appeal after his cap went missing from a storage facility in Brisbane.
