Paris Diamond League Gears Up for Thrilling Javelin Contest

New Delhi: It is hard to resist the excitement of the high-octane drama that will play out when five of the eight javelin throwers in the competition have personal bests over 90 meters. A javelin performance unlike anything seen in recent years is expected at the Paris Diamond League on Friday.

Two-time Olympic medalist and reigning world champion Neeraj Chopra and Germany's Julian Weber are the only two of the five 90-meter-plus javelin throwers competing in Paris to have broken into the elite club this season during the Diamond League's Doha leg. Weber defeated Chopra in a thrilling battle by first reaching his first 90-meter milestone, followed by surpassing him with his own personal best (91.06m).

They reunited in Poland a week later in Chorzow, where Chopra once again came in second, this time behind Weber, with scores of 84.14m and 86.12m respectively. The two newest members of the 90-meter club are currently engaged in a thrilling battle in this season.

Even though they will be popular in Paris, the remaining competition cannot be disregarded in any way. When two-time world champion and Paris bronze medalist Anderson Peters (93.07m) has the longest throw, no. The Grenadian has the potential to dominate and center the competition on himself on his day with his quick arms. He did exactly that at the 2022 Eugene World Championships, when he bewildered his competition by executing three throws exceeding 90 meters.

For instance, Chopra will be eager to make things right in Paris after having yet to win his first match of the year. Weather conditions will be conducive for making large throws. Julius Yego, the Rio Olympics silver medalist from Kenya, and Keshorn Walcott, the 2012 Olympic champion, are the other two 90-meter-plus throwers. Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch and Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem are the two best shooters that are absent.

Last month, Nadeem's season started at the Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea, where he won a gold medal for an 86.40m throw.

Chopra will begin three consecutive events at the Paris meeting. After the Golden Spike tournament in Ostrava on June 24, he will participate in his own competition, the Neeraj Chopra Classic, in Bengaluru on July 5. These three events will be a great warm-up for the World Championships in Tokyo in September.

Freed from the weight of 90 million, Chopra is now able to compete with an open mind. Chopra had difficulty with his throws at the Janusz Kusociński Memorial in Poland, one week after breaking the difficult 90-meter mark in Doha. At the very end, he threw his best throw of 84.14 meters.

Chopra has said that he has made few technical improvements this year in an effort to gain distance. In his quest for a good performance at major championships, Chopra's primary goal was to surpass 90 meters, and he is now being coached by the famous Jan Zelezny, the three-time Olympic gold medalist and former world record holder.

It will give him the confidence to compete with Nadeem and Peters, who are both capable of throwing 90 meters with ease. Chopra's exceptional skill and versatility enable him to travel far. Chopra has consistently made throws of 87m to 89m over the past three years. Nadeem stunned him at the Paris Olympics with two huge throws of 90 meters, with the 92.97 meter heave earning him the gold medal and an Olympic record. Chopra was able to throw 89.45 meters, which was enough to win a silver medal in Paris. Chopra is now making a comeback to Paris a year later, confident in his ability to make such massive throws.

Chopra will be looking to win the Diamond League Trophy that he last won in 2022 in addition to defending his World Championship championship later this year. With eight points, Weber is presently in the lead in the Diamond League competition, ahead of Chopra (seven points) and Peters (six points), the current Diamond League champion. Three more Diamond League legs remain for male javelin throwers: Silesia (August 16), Brussels (August 23), and the championship in Zurich (August 29).

The DL sessions in August will be a great opportunity for the top athletes to give it their all since Tokyo Worlds is set for September 13–21. Paris will be crucial for Chopra in that situation if he wants to score as many points as possible and take the lead.
