Mumbai: Rishabh Pant's tale keeps getting bigger as this is now his third trip to England. The Indian left-handed batter had already demonstrated his dedication to breaking up the game, even during his first series in 2018, long before Brendon McCullum joined forces with Ben Stokes.

The England bowlers now realize that they must find ways to mitigate Pant's brilliance for the remainder of the trip after his twin hundreds in the Leeds Test.

"When I first saw him, he reminded me of Adam Gilchrist... a different sort of player, of course, but... the (big) difference it can make to a team when a wicketkeeper can bat at that level. Former India head coach Greg Chappell made the observation on the sidelines of the introduction of "str8bat," a smart bat technology device, that Rishabh scores runs at a really high pace, giving you time to win cricket games.

The amazing heights that Pant has achieved are illustrated by the comparison to Gilchrist. The Australian is commonly considered the top wicketkeeper-batter since he was able to maintain his end of the bargain with the gloves while also being able to hit aggressively. Pant is gradually approaching Gilchrist's batting average, with 44.44 compared to 47.60, and is performing in a similar manner. Indeed, the Indian left-hander is now able to set his sights even higher since he is batting at No. 5, two places above Gilchrist in the batting order.

"Not all of the shots Rishabh executed are included in the MCC playing manual. Chappell stated, "He is truly reinventing the game. You never quite know what to expect from him from the first ball." He is likely to either play the falling ramp shot or jump down the wicket at any point to the quick bowlers. You never really know what to expect. It puts the opposition on their toes. He wins matches. In the final game, he almost changed the outcome.

It has been extremely challenging for the opposition to predict how Pant's craziness will manifest itself. You can only be certain that he will always try to do the unexpected.

Pant struck first with those blows, whether it was charging Ben Stokes second ball in the first innings or doing the same to Chris Woakes second ball in the second innings, before he got comfortable. The fact that his boundaries varied in different areas—a signature boundary over Stokes head and an edged boundary behind the wicket against Woakes—was irrelevant. It was Pant's way of demonstrating early intent. Additionally, the Pant strategy involved not playing too close to the end of Day 1 and moving the ball down the field to Woakes for a four to square leg.

Not until late in the first inning did he see his falling scoop shot, which is widely praised when it comes off and criticized when it doesn't. At the age of 80, Pant bowled one for four to fine leg after succumbing to a Shoaib Bashir off-spinner. Pant then struck another ball over deep midwicket in the same over, breaking the spinner's length.

"Rishabh's falling paddle sweep is not unintentional. It's deliberate and really brilliant. In his post on X, Sachin Tendulkar said that going down with the shot allows him to get beneath the ball and scoop it over leg slip with precision.

Pant seemed to be in an unusual hurry to start the second essay at Leeds. The paddle scoop was malfunctioning. He was ignoring the game's circumstances. At that point, the stump mic captured Pant's self-talk, which said, "Maarna hai toh seedha lag jaayega naa iss ball pe, kuch alag karne ki zarurat nahi hai." ("If you want to hit, you can hit it straight, there is no need to do anything different.")

He chose to wait before attacking once more at the time of his choosing.
