PCB Criticized Over Kamran Akmal’s ‘Unprofessional’ and ‘Illogical’ Appointment

The former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal voiced his displeasure with the Pakistan Cricket Board's choice to retain Azhar Mahmood as interim coach, calling the move "illogical and reflective of poor management." Mahmood, who was named assistant coach for all formats in 2024, is now serving as the acting head coach of the Pakistan national team. It is anticipated that he will continue in his position until his present contract expires in March 2026.

On The Game Plan Podcast on YouTube, Kamran Akmal voiced his displeasure with the Pakistan Board's choice, saying, "I just don't understand the logic behind this decision. It's just like when Mickey Arthur was named director of cricket by the PCB but was still permitted to play for a county squad. I was unable to comprehend it at the time, and I am still unable to do so now.

Since 2021, Azhar Mahmood has been the seventh head coach selected by the PCB. He took over from Jason Gillespie, an Australian cricketer, who had previously taken over for Aaqib Javed, yet another interim coach. Akmal blasted the PCB for its inconsistent decision-making, claiming that these appointments have led to enduring issues.

"Lack of gravity"

"That role (Mickey Arthur) has continued, and it has brought many problems into Pakistan cricket," Akmal stated in his attack on the PCB's choice. The temporary coaching arrangement is currently experiencing the same issue. Prior to this, the sequence was Aaqib Javed, followed by Mohammad Hafeez, and then Azhar.

"These actions show a lack of seriousness. The PCB will be able to avoid making such compromises or temporary appointments when it begins to take its responsibilities more seriously and behave more professionally.

In 2023, Arthur rejoined the Pakistan setup as team director while simultaneously managing Derbyshire in England, a dual arrangement that Akmal thinks caused structural issues in the squad. Mahmood is now serving as Test coach, and he was noticeably absent from the coaching staff during Pakistan's most recent white-ball series against Bangladesh; it is not anticipated that he will continue in his role as white-ball assistant coach throughout this term.

Kamran Akmal put it this way in the end: "Everyone has been appeased, and now Azhar has also been rewarded. If you've made him head coach, give him the whole time and authority. What other purpose would there be?
