In a historic victory for the franchise, the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Indiana Pacers in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals on Sunday at the Paycom Center. With Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams leading the charge, the Thunder won their first NBA title since moving to Oklahoma City in 2008.

Two championships have been won by the Oklahoma City Thunder in their history. When Dennis Johnson guided the squad to a 4-1 victory over the Washington Bullets in 1979, the Seattle SuperSonics won their first championship and Dennis Johnson was named Finals MVP.

With the Thunder defeating the Pacers in a thrilling seven-game series in 2025, they won their second championship. With losses in 1978 (SuperSonics vs. Bullets), 1996 (SuperSonics vs. Bulls), and 2012 (Thunder vs. Heat), the franchise—which started as the SuperSonics in 1967 before relocating to Oklahoma City in 2008—has a 2-3 record in its NBA Finals appearances.

With their 2025 title, the Thunder ended a 46-year championship drought following their 1979 victory. With a league-best point differential of 12.9 and a franchise-record regular season record of 68-14, surpassing the 1971–72 Lakers' record, OKC dominated the 2024–25 season.

Despite a Game 6 setback, the Thunder's depth, supported by Gilgeous-Alexander's MVP-calibre performance and one of the best defenses in the league, led them to win Game 7.

Halfway through the first quarter, Tyrese Haliburton, the Indiana Pacers' standout player, suffered an injury. The point guard got off to a great start in the decisive game with three three-pointers in the first five minutes before he tripped and fell while attempting to drive towards the basket.

With five minutes remaining in the quarter, the team's medical staff raced to his side as he sobbed and pounded his fist. Later, with the assistance of two personnel and a towel covering his head, he was seen cautiously making his way to the locker room.
