Nehra Spotlights Gill’s Impressive Captaincy Growth Over the Last Year

Mumbai: The national selectors would hope that Shubman Gill's rise to Test captaincy will be as successful as other radical choices in Indian cricket that were first tested in the Indian Premier League (IPL), like the appointment of Rohit Sharma as captain, the rise of Jasprit Bumrah as a world beater, and Suryakumar Yadav as a T20 batting marauder.

When Gill walks out to toss at Leeds on Friday in the first of the five-test India-England series, which will be broadcast on Sony Sports Network, he will be the fifth-youngest Indian captain, including Ravi Shastri's lone Test.

In the IPL, Gill gained experience as the captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT). "In the last twelve months, there has been a significant change in Shubman the captain since his first year as captain," GT head coach Ashish Nehra informed a chosen group of media, including HT. "He may have been a bit shy and introverted before, but he has gotten a lot better. He has a better relationship with his bowlers. In addition, he has acquired experience on the world stage.

The challenges of leading in Test cricket will be very different. However, Nehra thinks he has already displayed signs of maintaining composure in stressful situations. "I personally rate him, which is why we made him a captain," said Nehra. "He is a quick learner and a confident man. The fact that he has his own thoughts is fantastic. In Test and ODI cricket, I believe you have a bit more time. You must maintain an even greater level of composure while playing T20 cricket. Shubman is extraordinarily composed for his age, and at 25, he is quite mature.

Shubman Gill is developing as a captain with every game: GT Director of Cricket - India Today

Gill was promoted to captain for GT following Hardik Pandya's unexpected move to the Mumbai Indians. Gill himself admits that it took him a while to separate batting and captaincy during his first year.

The challenges of leading India would be unique. Having runs to show for would be beneficial since it's the easiest way to gain the respect of his teammates.

"The rest of the batting lineup will have an easier time if the top three score runs for Shubman at No. 4. Nehra stated, "Naturally, scoring runs gives you greater confidence as a batter." "He will have his own expectations with himself. In my opinion, what kind of cricket they play is more important than the outcome. In recent series in England, India performed much better than the scoreboard showed. Therefore, playing good and exciting cricket will be essential.

Given that India's batting lineup lacks experience, it will be fascinating to observe how Bumrah leads the speed attack and how Gill manages his workload to get the most out of his abilities.

“The judge of Bumrah’s workload will be the fast bowler himself, not Gill,” Nehra stated. “I have been hearing that Bumrah will play the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Test. But what if it rains in the first Test? You can’t make these plans well in advance. Who knows, perhaps he'll enjoy playing back-to-back Tests.

“In several instances, we have witnessed Bumrah taking five wickets in 12–13 overs. He is that talented. The captain and physio will be informed by the bowler on how well his body is handling the situation. This is impossible to plan. This is not a film.
