Nationals Fire Top Brass: Who Leads the Team Now?
7 months ago | 5 Views
After finishing last in the National League, the Washington Nationals announced Sunday that they had fired both president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo and manager Davey Martinez.
After a 21-5 run differential over the course of the series' final two games, the team's downward trend continued, culminating in this choice.
The New York Post quoted principal owner Mark Lerner as saying in an official statement, "On behalf of our family and the Washington Nationals organization, I want to first and foremost thank Mike and Davey for their contributions to our franchise and our city."
"Our family will always be appreciative of their years of commitment to the organization, which included their involvement in bringing a World Series title to Washington, D.C. The on-field performance has not lived up to our or our supporters' expectations, despite our gratitude for their previous accomplishments.

Who will take over for Mike Rizzo and Dave Martinez?
The team's current senior vice president and assistant general manager, Mike DeBartolo, will serve as interim general manager. On Monday, a formal decision is anticipated regarding who will lead the group in the future.
As the Nationals prepare to choose first in the next MLB Draft, Lerner stated, "We're lucky to have Mike DeBartolo as a member of our company because he is an intelligent and thoughtful leader."
"We are confident in his ability to lead the baseball operations crew through these crucial next months as we prepare for the trade deadline and hold the No. 1 overall choice in this year's MLB draft."
Rizzo, who had been working with the group since 2007 and was named GM in 2009, was one of the masterminds behind Washington's victory in the 2019 World Series. Martinez, on the other hand, served as the team's manager from 2018 till the championship season, when he was the dugout assistant.
Nevertheless, since the start of their rebuilding in 2021, the Nationals have not placed higher than fourth in the NL East. They are in last place with a record of 37-53 this season, having lost five of their previous six contests.
"I've always loved and respected Davey's devotion to the game of baseball and the love he has for his players," Lerner stated. "He has led our organization for nearly eight years, including during some of our greatest moments, such as the 2019 season that we will never forget."
"Even if this chapter is over, we know that it doesn't signal the conclusion of what should continue to be a long and successful baseball career," Lerner said in conclusion.
