Following Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) eight-wicket victory over Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 in Mullanpur, we now have our first finalist for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. All attention is currently on the next Eliminator match between the Gujarat Titans and the Mumbai Indians at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. The victor of this competition will advance to Qualifier 2, where they will compete against the Punjab Kings for a spot in the finals.

The route to the playoffs

Shubman Gill led the Gujarat Titans, who appeared at ease during the league round and were the top contenders to place among the top two. In contrast, the Mumbai Indians overcame their four losses in their first five games. The side, led by Hardik Pandya, then secured a comfortable position by winning six games in a row. After defeating the Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium, the five-time winners then secured a spot in the playoffs.

However, the Mumbai Indians' fourth-place position, which earned them a spot in the Eliminator, was established by their defeat against the Punjab Kings in Jaipur.

Head-to-head matchup between the Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians

In the IPL, the Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans have played each other seven times. Gujarat have won five of these seven meetings, while Mumbai Indians have won twice.

Only once during the 2025 IPL season did the two clubs face each other. The game, which was held at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, was a nail-biter. Due to Rahul Tewatia's heroics, Shubman Gill and company were able to secure a three-wicket victory thanks to the Duckworth-Lewis approach.

Who are the frontrunners for a spot in Qualifier 2?

Given the head-to-head record, Shubman Gill's Gujarat Titans are the favorites to secure a spot in Qualifier 2. Additionally, Mumbai Indians have not beat any of the top three teams in the IPL 2025 season because all of their victories have come against the lower-ranked teams.

Due to his national responsibilities in England, Gujarat Titans' star batter Jos Buttler will be absent from the Eliminator. Kusal Mendis of Sri Lanka is expected to fill his position in the XI.

Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks have returned to their homes in Mumbai Indians. In the Eliminator, Jonny Bairstow is now predicted to start the batting alongside Rohit Sharma.
